How a Japanese company built a European success story

Over 20 years ago, NIPPON Genetics EUROPE was founded in Düren as a subsidiary of the Japanese lab equipment supplier NIPPON Genetics. Since then, the company has grown into an innovation hub, developing cutting-edge solutions for molecular and cell biology researchers. CEO Jürgen Lünzer gen Lünzer shares insights into the company’s journey, product innovations like Blue/Green LED technology, and the challenges of today’s life sciences industry.

From Japan to Europe: a strategic expansion

Jürgen Lünzer’s journey with NIPPON Genetics began in the late 1990s when he was working in bioanalytics and international sales. His deep interest in Japanese culture and strong business relationships led to the opportunity to help the company establish a European presence.

“Initially, I was just supposed to consult and explore the European market for products that could be of interest to Japan. But before long, we saw an opportunity to actively participate in the European market ourselves. That was the beginning of NIPPON Genetics EUROPE.”


A Focus on innovation

While the Japanese parent company remains a major distributor of well-known brands, the European branch has carved out a niche in research and development, working closely with universities and research institutions. This has allowed the company to introduce unique solutions tailored to the needs of scientists.

One standout example is the Blue/Green LED technology used in the company’s gel documentation systems, including the FastGene FAS-X. Unlike traditional UV-based detection, Blue/Green LED technology is safer and more sustainable.

“At first, researchers were skeptical, but after countless demonstrations, they saw the advantages. Today, our gel documentation systems are used worldwide, and the FAS-X even received the German Innovation Award 2024.”

Customer-driven product development

Customer feedback is at the heart of NIPPON Genetics EUROPE’s success. A great example is the company’s MIDORI Green stain, developed as a safer alternative to ethidium bromide for DNA staining. This product was shaped by conversations with researchers who needed a less hazardous yet highly effective solution.

Another major milestone was the development of an in-house software platform for the FAS-X. Initially functional but basic, the software underwent a complete overhaul thanks to Lünzer’s son, who brought a modern, intuitive design to the system.

“That was a defining moment for us. We combined scientific expertise with user-centered design, and the result speaks for itself.”


Challenges in the lab equipment industry

Despite its successes, NIPPON Genetics EUROPE faces significant challenges. The increasing consolidation of the industry means that smaller companies must differentiate themselves through unique innovations rather than price competition.

Additionally, global supply chain disruptions continue to impact product availability, and growing bureaucratic regulations create hurdles for bringing new technologies to market.

“If we want to continue supporting researchers effectively, we need streamlined regulations and improved supply chain resilience. Innovation should not be slowed down by bureaucracy.”


What’s next for NIPPON Genetics EUROPE?

Looking ahead, the company is expanding its portfolio beyond nucleic acid technologies into cell biology and proteomics. One exciting development is a patented cryopreservation method that allows cells to be frozen without liquid nitrogen, making the process safer and more efficient.

“Our goal remains clear: Innovation for You. We will continue to develop solutions that help scientists push the boundaries of research while making lab work safer and more efficient.”
