Expanding Horizons: Progress Update on the Perry Glass Studio at Chrysler Museum of Art

As the construction progresses at the Perry Glass Studio at Chrysler Museum of Art, we're thrilled to witness the transformation unfold. In a recent hard hat tour led by Robert Crawshaw of Work Program Architects (WPA), he highlighted that the expansion project is not just about adding space; it's about envisioning a resilient future for downtown Norfolk in the face of sea level rise concerns.

The expansion of the Perry Glass Studio is more than just an architectural endeavor—it's a testament to the communities commitment to sustainability and resilience. The new design integrates green solutions to address the pressing concerns of sea level rise, ensuring that the studio remains a beacon of creativity and innovation in Norfolk’s vibrant NEON District.

Featuring a theater-style performance hot shop, glass-making studios, gallery space, and more, the expansion emphasizes transparency and connectivity. With large store fronts allowing "process on display”, visitors can immerse themselves in the art-making process while forming a seamless connection between the studio and the Chrysler Museum.

incorporating native plantings and rainwater collection systems. This approach not only enhances resilience but also serves as a valuable teaching tool for the surrounding areas, leading by example.

With the project now 60% complete, we're excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. The expansion positions the studio as a regional educational hub for glass art, fostering creativity, collaboration, and public engagement.
