Expanding on: “Do Consumer Devices Work For The Enterprise?”
The future is definitely purpose built devices for the enterprise. Imagine a contractor trying to do tasks with a Swiss Army knife versus a purpose built tool? Many will say BUT in a knowledge worker or modern setting software is the tool regardless of the underlying tablet or phone; a slippery slope to sub-optimal mobility initiatives. I’ll take Robert’s points a couple of steps further.
Cost: Is very important to every enterprise but not cost as an end in and of itself. Side shifting, ignore, and or kicking future operational costs down the road is a typical hallmark of immature enterprise mobility initiatives.
Low cost consumer goods often suffer WiFi deficiencies, come out of the box with older OS versions (why deploy devices with known security issues), power management deficiencies, and lack alternate deployment (kiosk, vehicle, secure environments, etc.) and aren’t designed for an enterprise world including rapidly evolving use cases such as augmented reality (AR).
Future resistant: Most line of business (LoB) devices rely on additional peripherals (scanners, printers, point of sale, RFID, etc.) where the peripheral may or may not out last the underlying tablet/phone. Bluetooth is no panacea for anyone who has deployed at scale nor is a one and done hardware strategy. A bridge between a robust peripheral ecosystem and the computing platform is imperative. The universeSYSTEM from #ottberox is the leader in delivering such flexibility.
Designed for “when life happens”; The legacy manufacturers charged massive premiums for “business continuity.” Today such premiums are often misplaced with the democratization of MILSpec, IP rated, and far more durable devices than even five years ago. The unique cases of intrinsically safe and similar increasingly represent niche cases.
In combination with our partner ecosystem not evaluating #socialmobile in any enterprise mobility initiative (beyond simple email and Salesforce.com usecases) will most likely be a costly oversight.
