A new all-affordable apartment complex was recently approved for 30 Water Street in Ossining, Westchester County, on the former site of the Village Department of Public Works property. Developer WBP Development LLC received final approval for financial assistance from the Westchester County Industrial Development Agency on August 29. The $94 million project was designed to transform the former industrial site into a fully affordable housing development. The development will consist of two new buildings with 109 rental apartments in total, serving households with incomes and rents ranging from 30 to 80 percent area median income. The residences include 40 one-bedroom units, 60 two-bedroom units, and nine three-bedroom units. https://lnkd.in/gg5_NpEn

D emand for electricity, both commercial and residential, is surging nationwide, even as aging grids show signs of strain. That’s why Upstate Upgrade, a $4 billion investment by the utility National Grid is one of several potential game changers for Upstate New York and its surging semiconductor sector. The six-year project announced in March is to yield more than 1,000 miles of new transmission lines along with new and upgraded substations across 10 Upstate counties. The investment, the utility says, is to include new technologies that will increase the grid’s performance and reliability — especially in the face of increasing threats posed by extreme weather — while enabling the delivery of a growing portfolio of renewable energies. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has extended the public comment period for the Draft Blueprint for Consideration of Advanced Nuclear Technologies to November 8, 2024. Comments will be accepted until Friday, November 8, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. ET through the comment portal on NYSERDA’s website. https://lnkd.in/gtTuQPwa The final Blueprint for Consideration of Advanced Nuclear Technologies is expected to be published in the coming months and will outline additional public engagement activities on the issues addressed in the Blueprint.

Senator Chuck Schumer announced $9.4 million in federal funding aimed at helping small businesses tap into the semiconductor supply chain across the Capital Region and beyond. The funding, awarded to New York State, is in addition to $1.5 million from the Empire State Development Fund. The funds will support the Semiconductor Growth Access Program, which is designed to provide technical assistance to small and diverse businesses looking to access the supply chain in both the service and manufacturing sectors. Katie Newcombe, Chief Economic Development Officer at the Center for Economic Growth in Colonie, is one of the local officials overseeing the distribution of these funds in the Capital Region. With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Binghamton University, Cornell University, Syracuse University and the Rochester Institute of Technology are partnering to create the “Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine.” The four academic institutions are joined by the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST), Launch NY and CV4 to form a coalition. The goal is to make Upstate New York the capital of battery production. Workforce development will be a focus throughout the initiative. Each institution will focus on a specific section of the partnership: RIT will focus on the required safety testing for batteries to get to market. Syracuse University will lead workforce development. Binghamton University serves as the lead on the project and research and development activities. The village of Bergen will have $1.26 million from the state to use for the replacement of a four-decades-old substation, thanks to an announcement Wednesday from the Empire State Development. The money came from an award of nearly $25 million ESD announced that will improve five locations under the Focused Attraction of Shovel-Ready Tracts New York grant program. For Bergen, the $1.26 million will also improve distribution lines, which will increase capacity to serve anticipated load growth. These upgrades will allow Apple Tree Acres Corporate Park to further develop an additional 47 shovel ready acres intended for future manufacturing.
