Exit Interview by Patrick Donegan #158
For some time, I’ve been looking for one “source” that curates modern takes on HR Tech, perspectives from the people who build it, and its impact on enterprise — something that’s tailor-made by professionals for decision-makers.
I never found it — so I decided to build it.
Every week, I’ll be sharing fresh insights on tech platforms, design, data, and the future of work — straight to your inbox.
My Thoughts
Ever hear that advice: “Do what doesn’t scale”? Bill Shufelt, CEO of Athletic Brewing, took that to heart — and it worked. ??
In the early days, Bill didn’t focus on automated strategies or big campaigns. Instead, he and his team put boots on the ground. They attended events, handed out samples, and connected with people face-to-face. ?? Those personal interactions converted curious tasters into loyal fans and laid the groundwork for what is now a leading name in non-alcoholic craft beer. ??
It’s easy to prioritize scalability in business, but sometimes, the most effective strategies are the ones that can’t be replicated by an algorithm ?? or streamlined into a process. ??
Personal. Authentic. Memorable.
These are qualities that don’t always scale easily, but can make all the difference when building genuine connections and lasting loyalty.
Whether you're just starting or navigating new growth, don’t underestimate the power of going the extra mile in an unscalable way. It could be the very thing that sets you apart. ??
If you want to hear more about how these unscalable moves made a difference, I’d highly recommend Bill’s appearance on The Logan Bartlett Show. Hearing him talk about those early days—hitting the pavement and earning trust one person at a time—was a great reminder of what it really takes to build something meaningful. ???

The Changing Workplace
Recent SHRM research highlights the persistent challenges employers face when hiring veterans, even though most HR professionals find the prospect appealing. Despite the interest, many organizations struggle to implement effective strategies; common obstacles include unidentified veterans and limited engagement with the local veteran talent pool. To overcome these challenges, HR leaders should consider developing formal veteran hiring programs, investing in training to better understand military skill translations, and fostering partnerships with veteran organizations to enhance outreach and support.
