Exit Interview by Patrick Donegan #149

For some time, I’ve been looking for one “source” that curates modern takes on HR Tech, perspectives from the people who build it, and its impact on enterprise — something that’s tailor-made by professionals for decision-makers.

I never found it — so I decided to build it.

Every week, I’ll be sharing fresh insights on tech platforms, design, data, and the future of work — straight to your inbox.

My Thoughts

I often see companies bragging about their revenue figures and employee headcounts as badges of honor. ?? There's no denying these benchmarks are crucial—but does bigger really always mean better? Should size alone cast such a long shadow over other qualities that, I would argue, are more telling of a company's true character? ??

Let's think beyond the traditional metrics. ?? What about the longevity of the company, the strength of its culture, its capacity for innovation, or how satisfied its customers are? ?? These aspects of a business often speak louder than the number of zeros in its revenue. And let's not forget profitability, a critical indicator often overshadowed by sheer scale. A smaller enterprise might lead the way in adaptability and innovation — aspects that, coupled with strong profitability, can often be more indicative of success than the size of a larger corporation. ?

The next time we’re measuring a company's worth, for whatever reason, let’s not limit our assessment to its market cap or workforce numbers. Let's instead consider things like how it impacts its people ??, its community ??, and even the environment ??. These are the metrics that don't make the front page of financial reports, yet they're the ones that truly sustain a business and define its legacy.

The Changing Workplace

Have you heard of the phrase "emotional wage"? It's gaining traction as a crucial component of job satisfaction, highlighting the value of non-monetary benefits such as strong relationships and a supportive work environment. Many workers are now prioritizing aspects like these, which can influence factors like job fulfillment and workplace contentment.

For leaders, cultivating a positive corporate culture that promotes interpersonal connections and respects individual contributions has never been more essential. As emotional compensation becomes increasingly recognized, it's shaping up to be a key factor in employee retention and overall organizational success.

All About Data

The "Great Resignation" continues to shape the workforce landscape as the trend of changing jobs not only persists but accelerates. Understanding this ongoing shift is crucial for organizations aiming to retain talent and adapt to evolving employee expectations.

Let’s take a closer look at the findings from PwC’s Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey 2024:

  • Increasing Resignation Intentions: The survey found that 28% of workers are likely to quit their current jobs within the next year, up from 26% last year and 19% in 2022, indicating a growing trend in job changes.

  • Workload Concerns: Nearly half (45%) of the surveyed employees reported an increase in their workload over the past year, highlighting a significant factor in job dissatisfaction.

  • AI Adoption and Expectations: About 72% of workers who occasionally use AI believe it enhances their work quality, and 82% of daily AI users anticipate increased efficiency, reflecting optimism about AI's impact on job performance.

Imagine if companies with large headcounts actually had a positive corporate culture. Looking at the blue collar realm - Distribution Centers and Warehouses. Some companies have done a fantastic job at making everyone from interns on up, feel like they are appreciated. I'm in Columbus, Ohio so I'll use a few examples: Those that have nailed it are pretty much in the genetic and pharma distribution areas. Those that could use a lot of help, well, you probably ordered something from them in the last 24 hours and your shipment is guaranteed in the next 2 days. ??

Fantastic point Patrick! So many behemoth companies struggle to maintain relevance in the marketplace, often borrowing strategies from smaller competitors. Delivering value across the board is worthy of deeper consideration.
