Exercise is the Key to Seasonal Resilience

Exercise is the Key to Seasonal Resilience

As the seasons change and we move into the winter months, we often find ourselves gravitating towards the comforting warmth of the indoors to slow down in pace. However, it's important to acknowledge that the colder months can also present challenges, affecting our mood and overall wellness. Research indicates a significant decline in exercise duration during this season, with people exercising for an average of eight minutes less. Additionally, the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can manifest more intensely. Understanding these dynamics allows us to proactively address them and make conscious choices to prioritize our mental and physical health during this transformative time of the year. On a personal level, at Fitness World, these dynamics drive our motivation to create a space where the community has access and resources to healthy movement, year-round.

Through my 28 years of experience in the fitness industry, I firmly believe that exercise is a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety. It elevates our mood, reduces stress, and boosts energy levels. In fact, studies have shown that exercise is 1.5 times more effective than medication in managing mental health. Physical activity also plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy immune system, which is essential during the cold and flu season. By engaging in regular workouts, you can fortify your bodies and minds, preparing them to withstand the challenges the winter months bring.?

It’s clear that this lack of activity we see each year during the winter months does us harm, but why is it still such a challenge to achieve a sustainable solution to keep people moving year-round??

There is a common misconception that fitness and exercise need to be extreme and significant to make any meaningful contribution to your health. Advertisements and social media portray fitness as an all-or-nothing pursuit, inadvertently discouraging many from starting or maintaining a fitness routine, especially during the challenging winter months. The truth, however, is far more attainable and encouraging. Research consistently shows that dedicating as little as 30 minutes of movement a day for 3-5 days a week, can significantly improve symptoms of anxiety and depression. This means a simple and achievable workout routine could encompass activities like short walks, cycling, dancing, or yoga, making it realistic and enjoyable, ultimately supporting a year-round active lifestyle. Consistency is key for both mental and physical health, so developing a regular movement routine that works for you that you know you will stick to, is the most important first step.?

During the winter months, many tend to reduce their outdoor activities and limit their interactions due to colder weather and shorter daylight hours. This shift can inadvertently contribute to increased feelings of loneliness and isolation. Introducing fitness into your daily regimen during this period becomes a contributor in combating this type of loneliness. Fitness isn't solely about physical health but can also be an avenue to build a supportive community around you. Working out with a friend, enlisting a personal trainer, making regular trips to the gym for in-person workouts instead of solely relying on virtual routines at home, participating in group fitness classes, and simply greeting fellow gym-goers who share your workout schedule—all these strategies play crucial roles in fostering a sense of community and social connection.

Finally, many think that achieving fitness goals necessitates access to an expensive membership to a luxury gym paired with top-of-the-line fitness apparel. This significantly limits individuals in their fitness journeys as it perpetuates the belief that effective workouts are only possible if you have a high disposable income, creating financial barriers that impede progress when fitness should be accessible to all. You don't need a brand new expensive workout outfit or top-of-the-line equipment to make meaningful strides in your fitness journey. Cost-effective gyms like Fitness World that offer diverse offerings and accessible means to access fitness create a sustainable space for individuals to access health movement all year long.

As we begin entering into these colder months, we can all play a role in proactively addressing the mental health challenges that often accompany this time of year. By moving our bodies and engaging in regular physical activity, we can combat the winter blues and strengthen our mental resilience. Whether it's a walk outside every day, a gentle yoga session, a group fitness class, or a workout at a local fitness center, we can set the standard for taking care of our mind and body year-round.

Chris Smith this is one stat that is new to me but intuitively it makes sense: "...studies have shown that exercise is 1.5 times more effective than medication in managing mental health." While I didn't grow up in the years where gyms were in the supply they are now, it's heartening to see youth in our community working out together and helping their friends. I moved to FW in Port Moody post-pandemic and got re-acquainted with a number of people in their early 20s from the local rec centre where I went before. Interestingly, after becoming a regular at the gym, it's surprising how many younger people introduce themselves and check in on my workout plans for the day or just say hello. If youth or others are struggling with self-image, self-esteem or identity heading to the gym is what I'd recommend. For many people who fear they're not in good enough shape or they'll be judged, this FW location like other gyms I've been live up FW's standards of no judgment and fitness your way.
