Exercise for burning fat? Think again.
Jonny Stannard
Helping ambitious men supercharge their fitness, career, relationships and finances so they can live life on purpose.
Whenever I take on a new client or am on a call with someone who wants to radically change their body and health, one thing I ask is….
“How much time can you commit to training per week?”
I don’t ask this to find out if they’re really committed or lazy ;-)
Interestingly, 90% of people say that they will train almost every day to ‘get the fat off’!
And it’s common for most people to believe that they need to do a minimum of 4 hours a week of training to see any sort of progress with shedding the weight.
I used to think that I had to exercise almost every day to get results and maintain them.
The reasons I thought that were because
1 - My diet was awful
2 - I drank too much alcohol at weekends
3 - I didn’t know how to combat stress
4 - I didn’t sleep that well
5 - I never did that much activity outside of gym sessions
Everyone places so much attention to how hard or long they can train.
And whilst it may have a minute impact on fat loss, it’s what happens outside of the workouts that are 100 times more influential on our progress.
You could train 2 hours a day, every day and still not shift any excess kilos if you’re sat down all day, eating a bad diet, stressed to the max and hardly sleeping.
I’ve worked with people who train 5 times harder than me or any of my clients, yet have nothing to show for it apart from bust up knees and sore joints!
When I start someone off on their health and fat loss journey, exercise isn’t top of the list.
We work on mindset, habits, activity levels and small shifts with nutrition.
Exercise can be whatever they enjoy doing.
It doesn’t really matter all that much initially.
It’s common for my clients to drop 10-20lb in the first 8 weeks following simple habits.
To this day I think I’ve only got 4-5 clients who exercise more than 3 hours a week!
If you’re struggling right now to see progress, and you feel fed up with how you look and feel, drop me a message on here.
