Exercise Benefits Last a Lifetime
With the cost of health insurance continuing its seemingly never-ending upward trend, it is imperative to develop health eating and exercise habits into your daily routine. It is never too late to make a change including healthier eating choices and getting in 30 minutes a day of strenuous exercise. This will lead to your modeling for your children healthy lifestyles that lay the foundation for their longevity and quality of life too. Plus latest research shows those having a genetic predisposition to dementia can offset the risk through active lifestyles, eating right, not smoking and consume alcohol in moderation.
One of my favorite running organizations is Girls on the Run Sierras, the local chapter of the national GOTR organization. GOTR “inspires girls to be joyful, health & confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” Over the course of a ten-week program, girls from 3rd through 8th grade learn essential skills to help build confidence and establish a lifetime habit of health and fitness. At the end of the program, the girls and their volunteer “running buddies” participate in a local 5k race. It’s an awesome program for young girls to connect, build confidence and compete!
For adults wanting to connect socially for fun or training with other runners, there are two terrific and FREE resources to do just that! Reno Running Company is locally owned by a husband/wife duo and they now have two store locations, each with their own run club. Northern Sierra Endurance Training (NSET) is another local running/walking group that provides weekly group runs, training schedules and seminars, aid stations along long runs and hosts one of my personal favorites-the New Year’s Day 7 mile breakfast run. I could not have completed a marathon without NSET’s support, encouragement and assistance!
Please be sure to check out what your local community offers and volunteer, donate, participate or just go for a walk or run. And remember, you can even break up your workout to do 15 minutes in the morning and 15 after work. Walk the dog in the morning, play with your children in the yard after work, exercise is fun!
