Exercise for Beginners: 5 Tips to Getting Started

Starting your fitness journey can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time, especially when you are new to fitness. How do you choose what exercises you need to do? Cardio or resistance training? How many reps and sets and the list can go on??? However, with the right approach, getting started can be a smooth, enjoyable, and fun process.


If you are a beginner and looking to incorporate exercise into your life, here are five essential tips to help you get started on your fitness journey.


1.??????Start slowly and gradually. Starting an exercise routine is not a zero to hero or all or nothing mentality. The best way to get started is slowly. Starting with one to two days and focusing on consistency rather than intensity. As your endurance, strength, and fitness improve your can gradually increase the duration, frequency, and intensity of your workouts. This approach with help you to reduce and prevent injuries and make the transition smoother and more sustainable.


2.??????Set realistic goals. Setting a realistic and achievable foal is crucial for when you are getting started. You need to believe it is achievable and be willing to obtain it. Start with small, incremental goals and gradually work your way up, and celebrate each achievement, no matter how small. This not only build motivation, but also momentum.


3.??????Find activities you enjoy. Exercise doesn’t need to feel like a chore. It can be fun and exciting and the best bit; exercise and working out comes in many different forms, so you can choose one you’ll enjoy. Not sure what you’ll like, try different types of workouts, classes, or sports until you find something that sparks your interest. When you enjoy what you're doing, exercise becomes something you look forward to rather than dread.


4.??????Listen to your body. Pay attention to your body’s signals during exercise. It is normal to feel some soreness and discomfort when you start working out, but there shouldn’t be severe pain. Pushing through when you should stop can lead to injury. Take regular rest days and know your limits and respect them.


5.??????Seek guidance and support. If you are unsure where and how to start, consider seeking guidance from a personal trainer. A personal trainer can help you with knowing what exercises to do, how to perform them correctly, staying accountable, and tailoring a workout to meet your needs and fitness goals. ?Additional find yourself a workout buddy who can provide support and accountability, making your fitness journey more enjoyable.


Remember, everyone starts somewhere. Your starting point is only that the place where you start. Progress takes time and starts from the moment you begin your fitness journey.


Be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process. Celebrate every step forward, no matter how small, and don't get discouraged by setbacks. With consistency and perseverance, you'll gradually build the fitness, strength, endurance, and confidence you are searching for.
