Exemplary Performance in Action: A Flag, a Walmart Greeter, and a Remarkable Response
Jaime Torchiana, M.S.
President, Exemplary Performance?? Marquis Who's Who in America USAT Team and 3X All-American Duathlete??
Two weeks ago, while leaving my Thursday morning CBP Networking Group, I noticed the flag in the adjacent Walmart parking lot was torn. Feeling that it was more disgraceful to leave it up torn than to have none at all, and compelled my patriotism, deep respect for Veterans, and a perceived need that our country would benefit from more unity now than ever before, I went inside and spoke with Welcome Associate Chuck at the Customer Service desk. I explained the situation, and Chuck, a Veteran, seemed to take it to heart. He said he would share with the Manager, "but not expect much," as others had raised similar observations without any action being taken.
Today, I noticed a brand-new flag proudly flying (well, little wind so not really "flying."). I went inside the store and immediately found Chuck, as he was stationed as a Greeter this morning, just inside the automatic doors. Remembering me and my request, I thanked him for the new flag. He explained that he had approached the Manager, thought through the proper ways to dispose of a flag, asked what size flag he could put up as a replacement, pulled one from Walmart's inventory, and after, accounting for it, replaced it on the pole himself.
Faithful readers will know that I usually post about high performance in the work arena. I felt this post was also necessary because it highlights an instance of exemplary performance that transcends typical work-related achievements. Stories like this (and my post earlier this week about Bob, the Cap Catcher), serve to remind us of the human elements behind our professional roles. Chuck's actions exemplify a commitment to values, responsiveness, and a dedication to service that are universally admirable, regardless of the industry. His dedication and responsiveness are truly inspiring. Thanks Chuck and thanks Walmart for doing the right thing!

3 个月Great job, Jaime! FYI, old flags can be dropped off at the Marine Corps League on Chestnut St, right after the bridge. They have a drop box in front of the building. They then bury the flags over Memorial Day. Cloth flags get burned. I'm sure that any VFW, or American Legion will take flags as well.

3 个月The fact that you - Jaime Torchiana, M.S. - took the time to park and walk into Walmart to let them know about the flag, and that Chuck persisted and took care of replacing the flag makes 2 of you who are exemplary, and who stand out! I'm afraid not many people would have noticed the flag, let alone do what you did. Thanks for all that you do!
