Executive Teamship

Introduction: seven reasons for the growing need for real team work in the boardroom

Between 2014 and 2024, the role of teamwork in the boardroom has gained increasing attention due to several factors driving corporate governance. Here’s an overview of key trends and the evolving need for teamwork in the boardroom during this period:

1. Growing Complexity of Governance:

- Globalization: As businesses expanded globally, board members needed to work closely together to manage complex, multi-jurisdictional issues, including regulatory compliance, market competition, and supply chain challenges.

- Technological Disruption: The rise of digital transformation, cybersecurity concerns, and innovations like AI required boards to work collaboratively to make informed decisions. Technology demands cross-functional expertise, and teamwork has been essential to bridge gaps in knowledge.

2. Greater Focus on Diversity:

- Diversity and Inclusion: There has been a strong push for diversity in the boardroom, including gender, ethnic, and cognitive diversity. This change has introduced diverse perspectives, making teamwork critical in creating consensus and leveraging different insights.

- Inclusive Decision-Making: With diverse boards, there is a growing emphasis on fostering an environment where all voices are heard, and effective teamwork becomes central to building collaborative and balanced decisions.

3. Increased Regulatory Scrutiny and Stakeholder Pressure:

- Shareholder Activism: Between 2014 and 2024, shareholder activism surged, putting pressure on boards to act in a more coordinated and transparent way. This has required a higher level of teamwork to present a united front and make decisions that align with both long-term growth and short-term demands.

- ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) Focus: Boards have been increasingly tasked with integrating ESG strategies. Addressing ESG challenges often requires teamwork between board members who might have expertise in different areas (e.g., environmental scientists, financial experts, and social impact leaders).

4. Collaborative Leadership Models:

- Shift from Hierarchical Models: There has been a gradual movement away from top-down leadership in the boardroom to more collaborative, flat structures. The CEO and board members often need to work as a cohesive team, sharing leadership responsibilities and building consensus through dialogue.

- Executive and Non-Executive Collaboration: The traditional boundaries between executive and non-executive board members have become more fluid, with greater collaboration on key business strategies and governance issues.

5. Challenges to Teamwork in the Boardroom:

- Remote Work and Virtual Meetings: The COVID-19 pandemic introduced challenges for teamwork as board meetings shifted online. Remote collaboration tools were widely adopted, but maintaining the same level of interpersonal trust and team dynamics has been an ongoing challenge.

- Cultural and Behavioral Conflicts: As boards become more diverse, cultural differences and varying expectations around collaboration and decision-making have sometimes led to friction. Managing these dynamics has required new strategies to improve teamwork and communication.

6. Evolving Roles of the Chairperson:

- Facilitation Over Authority: Chairpersons are expected to be facilitators of discussion and collaboration rather than authoritative figures. Their role in fostering teamwork, resolving conflicts, and ensuring productive discussions has grown over the past decade.

- Board Development Programs: Many boards have embraced training programs to enhance teamwork, communication, and leadership skills, recognizing that team dynamics are as crucial as individual expertise.

7. Future Outlook:

- Strategic Partnerships and Alliances: Looking forward, board members will need to work more collaboratively with external stakeholders, investors, and even competitors, making teamwork in the boardroom an ongoing priority.

- Data-Driven Decision-Making: The rise of data analytics in board-level decision-making will require teamwork to ensure that data is interpreted correctly and used strategically, with members from various disciplines working together for the best outcomes.

In summary, between 2014 and 2024, the need for teamwork in the boardroom has escalated due to increasing complexity in governance, regulatory changes, technological disruption, and the demand for diversity and inclusion. This period has also witnessed a shift towards more collaborative, inclusive leadership models. However, challenges such as remote collaboration, cultural differences, and navigating shareholder activism have tested board-level teamwork, requiring new strategies and approaches.
