Will An Executive Recruiter Find a Job for Me? 3 Recruitment Models and How to Leverage Relationships With Recruiters.
My conversations with mid and later-career professionals have revealed a common yet misguided belief: the notion that one can outsource their job search to a third party.
Rather than adopting a strategic approach to networking that leverages the hidden job market and initiates conversations to uncover opportunities, many opt for what's known as ‘reverse recruiting.’ This choice often leads to wasted time—months or even years—and financial resources on efforts to have someone else secure a job for them or place them in front of hiring decision-makers.
Are you considering the "easy button"?
Hiring a ‘reverse recruiter’ fits neatly into this category. However, it's more effective to view this not as a conventional recruiter working in reverse but as a marketing campaign designed to showcase your resume to potential employers and entice them to make you an offer.
This approach might seem appealing, especially if you doubt your ability to market yourself as the unique solution provider you are.
Both job seekers and recruiters know that the hiring process is flawed, further complicated by technologies meant to simplify applications for candidates and the sorting process for talent acquisition professionals. Unfortunately, systems like applicant tracking systems become overwhelmed with candidates endlessly tweaking their resumes in hopes of gaining visibility.

This article was inspired by witnessing numerous job seekers making the same mistakes, from sending resumes to me with vague requests like "keep me in mind for opportunities" to using generic messages from third parties who provide no context about the candidate they claim to represent.
In my latest Forbes Coaches Council article , I liken the concept of a 'reverse recruiter' to a sports agent's role. These agents earn their keep by understanding an athlete's qualifications and knowing the best-fit teams among the limited options available. Athletes pay these agents to represent, market, and find them the right team. Conversely, executive recruiters are compensated by companies to vet candidates and manage the hiring process from end to end, much like a talent scout paid by a team.
If you've successfully found a job through a 'reverse recruiter,' I'm eager to hear your story. Understanding how this model works effectively is of great interest to me. Please reach out with a personal connection request mentioning this topic.

9 个月Interesting take, Gina Riley! While I haven't used a 'reverse recruiter' myself, the concept does resonate with the way talent is scouted in the digital marketing world. It's all about finding the right fit and sometimes, that requires a specialist's eye. Curious to hear from others who've taken this route and how it compares to traditional job-hunting methods.

9 个月I never wanted anyone to "get" me a job, Gina Riley. In my industry, we had to prove we were capable from the get-go. To stand in front of 60-70 of your peers and perform, can be a humbling experience. I once studied with the principal French horn of the Chicago Symphony. He told me I should not go to Germany but stay in the US and he would "get" me a job. I'm glad I didn't take him up on his offer.

9 个月I know the services exist, but my question for anyone looking to hire anyone for this service is to understand what actions the RR will be implementing (metrics, objectives) on behalf of the job seeker. Resume writing? Alignment? Filling out job applications? Creating a company target list? Creating a list of network contacts? There's a market for it, but I would want to understand the strategy and execution of the service.

9 个月Gina Riley, thank you for sharing this. Your article clearly outlines how recruiters work and this is so important for job-seekers to understand, as I see a lot of confusion around this topic. I get this question often from clients and it will be great to have your article to share with them as a resource. (I was looking for a resource exactly like this last week for a client. Very timely!)
