Executive Producer Pro Tip: Never tell them you don't have enough money.

First, it's not your budget. More than likely you didn't decide that $X amount would be enough for a concept yet to be written. Second, when you ask for more money you unconsciously set up the narrative that you can't make it work. Tell them what the budget will get them and more importantly, what it might not get them. But be positive you can make something great. Example: "We are looking good for a solid 2-day shoot in Atlanta. Might not be able to get the Technocrane (or more extras or anamorphic lenses...) but I think we can make it work."

If that's a big deal to them, they will find the money. And then get the credit for saving the day as well. Either way, you win. You will have set expectations on the reality of the budget and maybe get a little more. And you don't need credit. You need a great production. #production #commercials #producing #executiveproducer #advertising

"You don't need credit, you need a great production". In our world at Capital E, our content has (comically) different budget considerations than what you're describing but shooting our course taught us something similar: it's worth all the critical thinking and collaboration it takes to make a product that feels good to watch.

I was just having this conversation this morning. This is why we've started breaking out a concepting phase with our clients and partners. We have a frank discussion about creative direction and budgets and develop a creative brief based on those discussions. Ever since we started doing that our clients are happier and our productions are much smoother.
