Executive perspectives on AI

There’s never been a better time to be in healthcare. And there’s always a good reason to be at HIMSS.
From my perspective, this year’s conference kicked off with an executive panel where I was thrilled to host a panel with Gary Fritz , Vice President and Chief of Applications at Stanford Health Care, Dr. Claire Bloomfield , Senior Director International Corporate Development at insitro, and Dr Rowland Illing , Chief Medical Officer and Director of International Public Health at Amazon Web Services.?
My prediction for this year’s HIMSS: it is going to be all about AI. And one thing is clear: we do not have to spend much time debating whether organizations want to leverage AI, the question is more how to get all the underpinnings right. My view is that with AI it all begins with data and then you need the people, process, and platforms to gather, condition, manage and govern your data. From there on, it’s the matter of involving the right partners and cloud partners.
My panelists highlighted that implementing AI is an end-to-end activity. It is not only the data scientists and experts who can change the health system, we need multidisciplinary teams, and we need to straddle different professions. Have you already considered training your procurement staff on AI? How about your Board members?

One of these future-looking areas is digital pathology. Today I am excited to announce Philips’ latest collaboration with Amazon Web Services (see more info: Philips and AWS collaborate to scale digital pathology | Philips ) in this space where we’re looking to combine the best of clinical workflow leadership with a scalable cloud solution to help accelerate decision-making and further transform patient care. Through examination of patient tissue samples, pathology plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of a variety of diseases, particularly cancer.
As much as there’s opportunity in AI, in essence its fundament is a data strategy, revolving around a people strategy.
