EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: ARE YOU WASTING YOUR ENERGY, COMPLAINING ABOUT THINGS YOU CAN’T CHANGE? (PART 1)

EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: ARE YOU WASTING YOUR ENERGY, COMPLAINING ABOUT THINGS YOU CAN’T CHANGE? (PART 1)

The Serenity Prayer says:

“God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change …

courage to change the things I can,

and Wisdom to know the difference.”????

?Wise guidance, applying to a wide range of challenging experiences in life.

Losing your job, or applying for another one, is just one of those challenging experiences.

LOSING YOUR JOB?

It often happens at short notice, sometimes delivered in the cruellest manner or hitting you at the worst possible time.

Whatever the reason behind it, the effect on you can be considerable.

It feels like a punch to the solar plexus, an emotional energy-sapping kick.?

And it leaves you with a significant loss of self-confidence and?self-esteem.

PICKING YOURSELF UP CAN BE A CHALLENGE IN ITSELF?

Beware though, desperate knee-jerk responses can set you back even further.

YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHAT HAPPENED

BUT YOU CAN CHANGE HOW YOU RESPOND TO IT

Easier said than done you might say, but expending even more energy complaining about the unfairness of it, how it should not have happened to you, or how you were treated, will only deplete those energy reserves you need to cope.

Friends, ex-colleagues and family might rush to your aid, but be careful – how many of them are truly competent in getting you back on your feet??

They will attempt to help by sharing their own experiences, suggesting things you could/should do, and suggesting changes you could/should make.?

WELL-MEANING ADVICE MIGHT NOT HELP YOU SURVIVE THE JOB MARKET?

You must appreciate that:

Most executives cannot explain what makes them exceptional or why they should be shortlisted for any vacancy.

Many years of experience working in multiple organisations or sectors is no longer enough when everyone else claims the same.

You can’t afford to look like every other applicant.?

You are unique - and need to demonstrate your difference.

Why are you better than others? Can you justify that with exceptional outcomes supported by indisputable evidence?

CV / Resume templates will fail you. They are not written for you, by you, or about you.?

Their only guarantee is to bring you down to a common low-level, like everyone else.

DON’T KNEE-JERK INTO ACTION AND GET IT WRONG

This new life challenge must be faced with focus; knowing and articulating why you are worth more than the card you were handed, to ensure you are prepared for the task ahead.?

HAVE THE COURAGE AND THE WISDOM TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT.

DON’T RELY ON HOPE

The vast majority of executives are not able to justify why they are worth the salary they currently, or previously received; let alone justify the salary they aspire – until they have worked with me!?

DON’T DECEIVE YOURSELF – YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO GET IT WRONG THIS TIME.

Hoping the job search world will be kind to you risks deluding yourself.

It can be a hard, cold and lonely experience, but even worse when you haven’t even got the first stage right.

If you’re worried about job loss hindering you or your future, it’s time to do something about it before it does.

Hiding from the reality of it serves no one, least of all you and everyone important to you.?

IT’S YOUR FUTURE – DOES IT MATTER TO YOU

If now isn’t the right time – how much worse must things get before it is??

If now is the right time, we ought to speak soon.?
