EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: WILL YOU SHY AWAY FROM NETWORKING?

EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: WILL YOU SHY AWAY FROM NETWORKING?

Whether you have been unemployed for months, or fear the impending doom of a redundancy message, it’s critical for you to avoid the job search perspective most executives take.

The jobs market is seen by most as tough, cold, unfeeling, and even cruel.??

You might have already learned that the real world doesn’t work for you.

You might have already noticed there are only a few jobs you can apply for – at your level, in your sector and your preferred area.

This might have started eating away at your confidence, self-esteem and self-worth.

You might be thinking about, or have started applying for any job, at any level, anywhere - even if it compromises everything important to you.

WELL STOP – IT’S TIME NOW TO START JOB SEARCHING CORRECTLY

Or are you prepared to risk enduring 6+ months of unemployment burning into your savings or severance pay?

THERE IS MUCH MORE TO JOB SEARCHING THAN ADVERTS AND RECRUITERS

Those ‘visible’ jobs only account for c.35% of vacancies. The other c.65% are hidden but are still just waiting to be found.?

SPECULATIVE OR COLD-CALL APPROACHES RARELY WORK

BUT NETWORKING IS THE KEY THAT OPENS DOORS

The challenge though is most executives either don’t understand it, fear it, are embarrassed by it, or even avoid it because they:

1.???? Don’t appreciate its importance

2.???? Don’t know how to do it

3.???? Don’t like ‘selling’ themselves

4.???? Don’t like approaching people they don’t know

5.???? They don’t know anyone who will give them a job

6.???? They don’t know the ‘right’ people

7.???? They think they know everyone in the sector already

8.???? They’ve neglected building contacts in the past

9.???? They’ve been ‘sold to’ by others

10.? They’re shy or not confident of it, or with it

11.? They have fixed views on how job searching should work

12.? And they Fear Rejection

WELL-MEANING ADVICE FROM FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND COLLEAGUES might lead you to believe they know best and know everything. It might also cause you to adopt their misconceptions and personal psychological barriers as your own.

Ask yourself who taught them and who taught those who taught them??

Are you in danger of promoting false perceptions through your own actions??

FIRST, LET’S UNDERSTAND WHAT NETWORKING ISN’T?

·?????? It’s not selling yourself

·?????? It’s not asking friends or family for a job

·?????? It’s not grovelling for help

AND IF YOU ARE SELF-PROMOTING, YOU ARE NOT NETWORKING!

We’ll cover more next week on the HOW of networking – and how easy it is to do, without self-promotion.

Learning how to job search correctly is vital, right now, before a lack of job search success drives you to lower your sights or commit time and/or energy to looking for second best.

You must recognise the importance of correctly focusing your activity on what you want, and avoid applying yourself to getting what you don’t want!

DON’T TAKE A RISK ON YOUR FUTURE.

If you think you’ve got everything right, think again. You probably haven’t.

Professional advice and guidance can make you stand out and set your job search campaign ahead of your major competition.

If you’ve never taken professional advice on how to job search correctly, how can you expect to do it efficiently and effectively?

It’s your future. Does that matter to you?

If now isn’t the right time – when will be??

Hi Samir! Thanks for your message. Keep watching out for the next part - I’m covering more on networking. If you could share a little more on the attempts you’ve made to contact people and how you’ve approached them, and I’ll try to focus on that for you. Your post has wet my appetite to learn more. I have tried to reach out to people to develop the conversation, and I have read many times about the hidden market accessible through networking. It could be that my approach was incorrect, but I look forward to learn more as my first attempts have been unsuccessful.
