In a world where qualifications and skills are often hailed as the stepping stones of success, it’s easy to fall into the trap of relying on their ‘value’.

THE WAY IT WAS

Your currency value, on leaving University, was your degree and the level of it.

After years of study, you were then separating yourself from others with the label of your degree pass.

A First, 2:1 or 2:2 back then, might have made a difference when you were looking for someone to give you a chance; someone prepared to give you experience and allow you to develop your skills as a platform to build your future.?

Once you have moved on, become more proficient, risen through levels of organisational hierarchy, and achieved head-of, director, or executive level, your degree pass label is no longer where your value lies.

BUT DON’T THINK YOUR ‘SKILLS’ OR ABILITIES ARE THE WAY FORWARD EITHER

YOU’VE BEEN GATHERING SKILLS AND ABILITIES ALL THE TIME

You might even be listing them – maybe 40 or even 50 of them – on your CV, but please be aware, that on their own, they don’t make you an attractive hire.

They only level the playing field and make you look similar to everyone else!?

A ‘skill’ is nothing more than an ‘ability’ to do something.

And nobody will value you – pay you – because you have the ability to do something.

You bring your abilities with you, free of charge, whether you use them or not.?

YOUR TRUE VALUE IS IN THE DIFFERENCE YOU CAN MAKE WITH YOUR SKILLS.

Whilst you’re not valued (paid)’ for having an ability – the difference you can make with them, and the impact you can have by using them, will make you stand out from the crowd.

The challenge now therefore lies in identifying and articulating them.

So how are you doing with that?
