EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: WHEN YOUR FINGER POINTS AT WHAT’S NOT WORKING, DON’T FORGET 3 FINGERS ARE POINTING BACK TO YOU!
Bernard Pearce
THE EXECUTIVE CAREER TRANSITION SPECIALIST ? Your essential bridge to realising your true value; the vital missing link in your search to secure the right job.
I share your frustrations; I understand your concerns and feel your desperation when your job search starts dragging out.?
When that happens, it’s only natural to point the accusatory finger at what you believe is not working, why it’s not working and what should be happening instead.?
At the forefront of your concerns will probably be the Job Market or the Recruitment System; closely followed by thoughts of discrimination in many guises.
Venting your frustrations on these ‘reasons’ may not be focusing on the real cause.?
Job seekers have complained for decades about job market challenges and drawn-out recruitment processes.?
But they become even more critical when it’s your job search they’re hindering. ?
Like the many thousands complaining before you, you won’t change anything in time for it to transform your search.?
DON’T WASTE YOUR ENERGY ON THINGS YOU CAN’T CHANGE

INSTEAD OF POINTING OUTWARDS, CHECK TO SEE WHETHER THE HURDLE MIGHT BE OF YOUR OWN MAKING.
FIRST – YOUR CV:
Do you, like most executives believe your CV is good?
Will it pass the critical first 2-7 second test?
Does it clearly prove your key value-adding strengths?
Or do you hope others will work them out for you?
Will it be an interesting and enlightening read?
Do you genuinely expect someone to shortlist you for an interview because of it? Why?
A: You might do; It probably isn’t; It probably won’t; It probably won’t; You’ll be disappointed!
We probably need to speak soon.
SECOND – YOUR JOB SEARCH
Have you defined what job, seniority, sector and geographical location you want?
Are you leaving it to others to work out?
Are you focusing all your energy on advertised vacancies?
Are you applying for any job you could do? Even those you don’t want?
Are you ‘networking’, or just asking others to find jobs you can apply for?

Are you following the job search herd like most executives? Do you expect different results?
We probably need to speak soon.?
THIRD – YOUR JOB INTERVIEW
Before attending an interview:
Can you answer the critical questions with confidence?
Do you know why you’ve been shortlisted?
Do you know what makes you an exceptional candidate?
Do you know why they should offer you the job?
Can you keep them interested and engaged during the interview?
Have you researched the organisation and their competitors?
Have you prepared ‘grown-up’ questions??
We probably need to speak soon.?
DON’T DECEIVE YOURSELF – YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO GET IT WRONG THIS TIME.?
It’s your job search and your future. You cannot afford to get it wrong.?
There’s no shame if you’ve never learned the right way, but there is real concern if you continue to follow the herd in what doesn’t work.
Hoping the job search world will be kind to you risks deluding yourself.
It can be a hard, cold and lonely experience, but it's even worse when you haven’t got the basics right.?
IT’S YOUR FUTURE – DOES IT MATTER TO YOU?
If now isn’t the right time – how much worse must things get before it is??
If now is the right time, we ought to speak soon.?
