Executive Job Seekers: The RAS of Job Searching
Bernard Pearce
THE EXECUTIVE CAREER TRANSITION SPECIALIST ? Your essential bridge to realising your true value; the vital missing link in your search to secure the right job.
Harness your subconscious to seek out your next job
Remember when you last bought a car?
Did you choose a particular model and colour? Was it because you wanted something not everyone had? Or because there weren't many of those around?
So why, soon after you made your mind up, did the roads seem full of similar cars and colours?
This is the Reticular Activating System (RAS) in your brain working for you. It's an important part of your survival mechanism – hard-wired into everyone.
Its role is to make you aware of things that may threaten your survival, or to highlight things that are important to you.
The brain is a complex instrument. At a subconscious level it can process 40 million bits of data every second.
At a conscious level, it can only process about 40 bits of information per second. Hence the importance of the RAS to search out what's critical for us.
This is particularly relevant when job searching. It can only help though when you are clear of what you are searching for.
If your job search is too wide, the reticular activating system cannot engage.
A shopping list for your next job, like that for a car, a holiday, or even your new home, will transform your search.

An Example:
Some time ago, a client from Portugal flew in for some intensive career coaching. He left his local airport as he had done hundreds of times before.
We focused on specifying his perfect next job. Its title, sector, size of organisation, geographical influence and ideal base location too.
On returning to his home local airport, he noticed one of the illuminated advertising signs. He had walked past these each time he'd used the airport before. It promoted an organisation that was a perfect match for the one we had identified as one he would want to work for. It was actually based in his hometown.
On getting home, he sat in the same chair he had been sitting in whilst waiting for the taxi to the airport. Next to him was the newspaper he'd been reading before leaving home.

An article in the newspaper grabbed his attention. It was about the organisation he'd seen on the airport advertising sign.
It didn't take him long to research the company further. Imagine then, his amazement to learn they needed expertise he was specialist in.
It didn't take long after that for him to arrange a meeting; soon followed by a job offer with a suitable package agreed.
Let this illustration be an example you can follow. Your Reticular Activating System can pick out a red Porsche from amongst all the other cars on the road. It can also pick out unrecognised data that could be critical to your job search.
It's your future. You can take a risk a finding something acceptable. Or you can harness your subconscious power to finding something spectacular.
Most people won’t. Do you prefer to follow the herd?
