The importance of people skills is reflected in most job specifications.?
BUT PEOPLE SKILLS ARE NOT AMONG THE INITIAL SEARCH CRITERIA!?
In a conversation with one of my international clients about the importance of soft skills in selection, he was adamant it was the first thing he looked for.?
His wife, who was with him, questioned that - but he stressed that soft skills prevented them from being the cause of, or the victim of social unrest.?
“I know”, said his wife, “but it’s not what you do!”
?Just before a full domestic broke out, she explained simply that, when they were looking for a new engineer, they first looked at engineers and then searched for the ones with people skills.
They didn’t, she explained, look for those with people skills and then hope to find an engineer amongst them!?
IT’S VITAL YOU REMEMBER THAT IN YOUR JOB SEARCH
No internal or external recruiter will start their candidate search based on personal qualities.?
They will search for the hard-skill deliverables first!
So, if your CV / Resume leads with your soft skills, personal qualities or non-hard-skill attributes, how do you expect to break through the critical 2 – 7 second first-glance filter??
Almost every day, I read of those at the executive level positioning themselves incorrectly, including for working with honesty, integrity, adaptability, flexibility and/or determination, focus and aspiration.?

I’m not saying these qualities are not valued or not important, but it’s critical to understand that they’re not the first thing recruiters look for!?
THE SIMPLE ORDER OF SEARCH
A long list will be drawn up starting with easily identifiable criteria, based around your skills, knowledge and experience. This might include your current job title; organisation or sector; qualifications etc. – even your current location!?
From that, a shorter list will evolve following a deeper dive into your relevant experience, and that will ultimately produce the shortlist for the initial interview.
It’s then, through the process of interviews that your personal qualities will emerge and your suitability, organisational and personality fit will be established.?
IT’S NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND!?
So, if you, like many at the executive level still get it wrong and don’t present yourself correctly, don’t be surprised if you’re not short-listed for an interview.
Your Key Value-Adding Strengths, need to be drawn out, validated, justified and then presented correctly with impact.
This will dramatically increase your job search success, and increase your confidence, self-esteem and preparedness for job interviews. I will ensure you get it right.?
As each month passes without your £10K-£15K-£25K income, you risk your commercial standing, self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem. ?
Your search will become even more desperate and soul-destroying.
We need to prevent that from happening. We must speak soon.??
IT’S YOUR FUTURE – DOES IT MATTER TO YOU?
If now isn’t the right time – how much worse must things get before it is??
If now is the right time, we ought to speak soon.?

Helping founders and coaches attract dream clients through LinkedIn branding
1 个月People skills are crucial for workplace success, but they won’t get you noticed if your hard skills aren’t front and center. Recruiters focus on what’s measurable first—your expertise and experience. Think of it like building a house; a strong foundation (hard skills) comes before the interior design (soft skills).
