Executive Job Search Tips: How to search more efficiently and keep up morale

The job search process can be long, lonely, and overwhelming — especially for senior leadership roles. So, if you are in the middle of a long search and struggling to land a role or if you're preparing to launch a search, here are some tips to help you search more efficiently and keep your morale up.

1. Have a clear focus on your ideal next role, industry, company, and working environment. Knowing what you want in the beginning is not only crucial to writing an effective, targeted resume and LinkedIn profile but also helps you be more efficient in your networking and job search efforts.

Searching for roles across countless industries and functions can spread your efforts too thin and be hard to manage. But if you have a clear focus on what your ideal role looks like and the type of company you want to work for, you can narrow your efforts and have a better chance of attracting the right opportunity.

2. Focus on smaller goals to stay motivated.

If you only focus on the end goal of landing a job, then every day that you don't get an offer will feel like a failure. ?????? ?????? ???????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ???????? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ???????????????????????? ?????? ???????? ????????, ???????????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????????? ??????????. So focus on progress and create and track mini-milestones throughout the journey. This can include things like:

  • Number of networking calls held
  • Number of first, second, or third-round interviews scheduled
  • Number of ideal companies or contacts identified

Moving forward a little each day by focusing on these smaller wins will help you ultimately land the job offer you’re looking for.

Notice I didn’t mention the number of online applications submitted. That is covered in the next key to an effective job search.

3. Create your own go-to-market strategy for your job search.

This is especially important for executive or senior leadership roles, where most opportunities are not found through online applications. Spending all your time applying online and then getting auto-rejections does terrible things to your confidence level. And confidence is crucial in landing a leadership role. Instead, create a tailored job search strategy focused on the channels that make sense for you as an individual. That may be working with recruiters, building and activating your network, or even focusing on your ideal company and not just on open jobs. If you want help with any of these things or if you've been searching for a while with no traction, reach out to us at D&S Executive Career Management for help.

4. Seek support when you need it

The job search process can be lonely, but that doesn’t mean you have to go at it alone. Seeking support from friends, peer networking groups, or even engaging with our coaches at D&S for job search consulting will keep you feeling connected.

Very insightful and spot-on article, Debra! I also strive to apply “QTIP” to the process: Quit Taking It Personally. This is hard to do, because it can feel very personal. One must continue to persevere.

Tracking smaller goals and day-to-day progress reminds you of the effects your efforts have, Debra Boggs.
