Coaching Conversation - Set & Enforce Boundaries (Act of Confidence #6)
Although Gayle knew she wanted to say ‘No’ to taking on more at work, she found it hard to do this in a way that felt like she wasn’t disappointing or letting others down. During the Acts of Confidence Program, Gayle recognised that there’s always going to be endless requests to take on more work, especially the more senior you get, and that learning to set and enforce boundaries and say no with confidence even when others are pressuring you, means that Gayle cares enough about herself and her projects to be realistic about her capacity. Ultimately it meant getting clear on what sort of work would add value to her skills capabilities and experience and ultimately help her achieve her career goals. Next it was having conversations early with key stakeholders, mapping out options and prioritising her workload, all while resisting the discomfort of saying no.?
While these conversations will not always go smoothly - we do know that getting clear about why a boundary is important and speaking up early when a boundary is at risk of being crossed is an important skill for us all to learn and practise.

This month’s deep dive - Executive Detachment
Over the last month we have been going deep on the value of Executive Detachment in our professional lives. Executive Detachment is NOT about being cold, heartless, or indifferent. It's about being invested in your work, whilst at the same time maintaining a calm and neutral perspective supporting you to navigate the workplace dynamics without feeling emotionally drained or exhausted.
What is Executive Detachment??
Executive Detachment is a way to approach your workplace experience that ensures you have the necessary neutrality to care appropriately and at the same time not be overly involved in areas where you have little responsibility or impact. It aids in clear decision-making, effective feedback? and the successful management of workplace interactions, fostering healthy balance? and productivity.
How does Executive Detachment link to Confidence?
You know the saying, "It's not personal, it's just business"? Well, the truth is, it's pretty hard to apply when you're knee-deep in the corporate bearpit. It's about taking a step back, viewing situations objectively, and making sound decisions without getting swamped in emotional chaos. This will boost your confidence at work and ultimately, Executive Detachment doesn't just build your confidence; it transforms it into a formidable leadership tool.

How Executive Detachment is a valuable leadership skill
It's easy to feel overwhelmed and to try to extend yourself beyond your remit, because you care. Executive Detachment helps you say 'no' when you need to and delegate tasks that aren't your responsibility. When you practise Executive Detachment, you set an example for others. They see you as a leader who can handle stress and challenges with grace and courage.
