The Execution of Strategy

What politicians around the world are finding out in a brutal way is that if your vision is not realised for the country, then people will vote you out at the ballot box.

This was true for Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, who has presided over the largest loss of a political party in the UK for a long time.

In business the execution of your strategy and vision as a leader is just as important. Our press is littered with the obituary of CEO's whose strategy had failed.

So I just want to share a few thoughts on the importance of creating executable plans to ensure that a strategy is realised. Here are what I believe are the key steps to executing strategy in business:

Set Clear Objectives and Goals

Define Specific Goals: Break down the overall strategy into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals/themes.

Remember strategy is about the destination and defining the framework around that destination. Therefore it is critical to break down those strategic plans into tactical steps that allow you to chart progress to the overall strategic goals. So for this process the SMART goals are incredibly helpful.

It may be obvious, but I will say it again. Strategy that does not have the customer at the heart of the vision is a strategy that will ultimately fail.

Communicate Objectives: Clearly communicate the strategic goals and objectives to all the key lieutenants, staff and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and understanding.

Develop Tactical Action Plans

Create Detailed Plans: Develop detailed action plans that outline the specific tasks, timelines, resources, and responsibilities required to achieve each goal.

Assign Responsibilities: Assign clear roles and responsibilities to individuals or teams for executing different parts of the strategy.

Allocate Resources

Budget Allocation: Allocate financial resources, including budgets for different initiatives and projects. This is essential so that that you can measure the return on investment when the goal is in play.

Human Resources: Ensure the necessary human resources are in place, including hiring new talent or reallocating existing staff.

Technology and Tools: Provide the necessary technology, tools, and infrastructure to support the execution of the strategy.

Establish Governance and Reporting Oversight

Create a Governance Structure: Establish a board governance structure with clear roles and responsibilities for overseeing the execution of the strategy.

Monitor Progress: For me this is so key. Implement mechanisms for regular monitoring and reporting on the progress of strategic initiatives.

Measure and Monitor Performance

Set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Those who follow my musings will know how I am so assertive about the importance of having real time data that is focused on measuring customer satisfaction and productivity. Define KPIs to measure the success and impact of the strategy.

Regular Reviews: Conduct regular performance reviews to track progress against goals and objectives.

Feedback Mechanisms: Implement feedback mechanisms to gather input from employees, customers, and other stakeholders.

Adjust, Be Agile and Adapt

Be Flexible: The agility and resilience of your business is key so that if economic or market changes ensue, then the ability for the business to adjust and adapt to a changed strategy based on performance data, changing market conditions, or new opportunities can take place with minimal shock.

Continuous Improvement through Innovation: Fostering a culture innovation, continuous improvement, encouraging teams to identify and implement improvements to processes and practices.

I could go on. But the importance of executing strategy in an agile, innovative way is essential to ensure that the business performance is realised, customers are served and that profit is generated continuously in the business.
