EXCLUSIVE: NHL Owner Working To Bring Major League Baseball Team To North Carolina

Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon wants to bring a Major League Baseball franchise to North Carolina, and he believes now is the time to try to make that happen.

“I will lead a group to put our best foot forward to get a Major League Baseball team in North Carolina,” Dundon said Monday night, in an exclusive interview with David Glenn of the new NCSportsNetwork.com website. “Now that the Hurricanes have a new lease all the way into 2044, now that we got the (PNC Arena) deal done, I want to try to bring another major asset to North Carolina.

“I know I’m biased, but I think Raleigh is the best place in the country for a new MLB team. And when I say that, I think we have the facts to back that up.”

Now that the Oakland (moving to Las Vegas) and Tampa (new stadium and development area) have almost resolved their stadium issues - it is time for candidates to emerge and Charlotte will be a leading contender.

I’ve always been amazed that NC didn’t have an MLB team but does have a successful hockey team. How can it not with the iconic Bull Durham movie?! ??♂?

With nearly 11 million residents, a highly educated workforce, a growing in-migration pattern, and strong disposable income economics; it only makes sense for MLB to come to NC. We just need to make sure we keep the tax rates and cost of doing business moderate. The taxpayers don't need to fund another stadium. We've done enough of that and the "economic impact" is never legitimate. I'm all for having winning teams and improving the quality of life, but billionaires don't need subsidies for sports venues. I know what the CAGR is for major league sports team valuations. They don't throw off profits, but they most certainly appreciate with very little negative tax impact until they are sold.
