THE CONRAD PREBYS FOUNDATION TAPS HEINZ ENDOWMENTS PRESIDENT AS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Grant Oliphant Has Been President of Pittsburgh-Based The Heinz Endowments Since 2014
SAN DIEGO – Dec. 1, 2021 — Bringing more than 25 years of foundation leadership and expertise in?effective regional philanthropy to San Diego, The Conrad Prebys Foundation is tapping Grant?Oliphant, current president of The Heinz Endowment, to become the new chief executive officer?effective March 2022.
Oliphant will leave his current post at the end of February 2022 after three decades of?philanthropic and public service stewardship in Pittsburgh, most recently through his leadership at?The Heinz?Endowments, a family foundation with assets of more than $2 billion and grantmaking that?exceeds $90 million annually. Previously, Oliphant served as president and CEO of The Pittsburgh?Foundation from 2008 to 2014, where he recast the community foundation’s mission around a?commitment to community leadership and impact and doubled its assets to over $1 billion.
The appointment follows a national search for the Foundation’s new CEO to lead the organization’s?next phase of growth, scale and impact, with a mission to improve lives and provide opportunities?for all San Diegans.?With assets expected to exceed $1.4 billion and annual grantmaking of more?than $60 million, the Foundation seeks to address community needs in San Diego through high-impact?giving and strategic initiatives in the visual and performing arts, higher education, youth?development, health care, medical research, and other charitable purposes consistent with Conrad?Prebys’ history of philanthropy in San Diego.
“I am thrilled and humbled by the opportunity to lead The Conrad Prebys Foundation,” Oliphant said.?“I have great respect for its mission, and I am excited about applying my knowledge and experience?in a dynamic place where the story of philanthropy’s potential is still being written. San Diego is?a vibrant city, but like every community it faces challenges that will define its future, and I?look forward to?learning from our partners, grantees and other members of the community about how?to make a difference there. From a personal perspective, I am also delighted to be moving closer to?my parents, as the experiences of the past two years have reminded me, like many Americans, about?the importance of family.”
“We are excited to welcome Grant and his incredible talents to San Diego early next year.?He?brings such a unique perspective earned from 25+ years as a philanthropic leader and executive.??His pursuit of innovative philanthropic ventures and his unwavering focus on impact will accelerate?the Foundation’s work in the San Diego region,” said Dan Yates, president of the Foundation’s board?of directors.?“His engaging leadership style is centered on collaboration and partnership, and he?is deeply committed to our mission. Grant will succeed Ms. Ann Hill, a respected attorney, to whom?we all are indebted for her leadership and service as Interim Executive Director of our Foundation?during the past year.”
“Grant is passionate about the field of place-based philanthropy and deeply committed to community?programming that delivers real and lasting impact.?He understands the complex issues at the core?of our grantmaking programs, our grantees, and the San Diego landscape,” said Foundation board?chair Tony Cortes.?“We look forward to working closely with him during the transition and?collaborating with him as he leads the Foundation toward the most effective execution of our?mission.”
Oliphant’s key accomplishments in Pittsburgh include:
????moving forward the redevelopment of a 178-acre former steel mill site as a center of?growth for the region’s innovation economy and as a model of green, inclusive design;
????the creation of The Pittsburgh Promise, the largest scholarship program of its kind?in the nation;
????the launch of the $30 million Center for Shared Prosperity at Carnegie Mellon?University, the nation’s largest serious attempt to align the work and assets of a global research?university with the needs of vulnerable communities and populations around it;
????the adoption of a policy focus for the foundation’s work on behalf of military?veterans, connecting insights gained in Pittsburgh to potential policy changes at the national?level;
????an expanded focus on the arts, including a 60% increase in arts giving budget and?the creation of a multi-year initiative to expand creative learning for youth;
????successful efforts to save the city’s African American Cultural Center and public?radio station;

????and a significant expansion of the foundation’s commitment to early childhood care?and education.

Nationally, he is a board member and immediate past chair of the Center for Effective Philanthropy,?which works to promote effective philanthropic practices, and previously chaired The Communications?Network for foundations. Recognized as a leading proponent of the idea that philanthropy must be?vocal in the defense and advancement of its values, Oliphant created the Endowments’ blog ”On?Point” and podcast “We Can Be.”
