Exciting Changes Ahead: Global Talent Program Transitions to the National Innovation Visa (NIV)

Global Talent Program

On 14 May 2024, the Australian Government unveiled a significant update to its migration strategy: the launch of the National Innovation Visa (NIV). This new visa program is set to replace the Global Talent Visa by the end of 2024, marking a new era in Australia’s approach to attracting exceptional talent.

Here’s everything you need to know about this transition, your options, and how to prepare for the future.

Key Announcements

The National Innovation Visa (NIV):

  • The NIV will be Australia’s flagship program for attracting high-performing entrepreneurs, major investors, and global researchers.
  • It will officially replace the Global Talent Visa by late 2024.
  • Detailed requirements for the NIV will be announced closer to the launch.

Global Talent Visa Program Updates:

  1. Expressions of Interest (EOIs) Closed: From 29 November 2024, the Department of Home Affairs no longer accept EOIs for the Global Talent Visa program.
  2. Direct Visa Applications Still Open: The Global Talent (subclass 858) visa program remains open. Valid applications can still be lodged directly with the Department.
  3. Processing Priorities: Applications will continue to be assessed in line with annual migration planning levels and processing priorities for skilled visas, including Ministerial Direction no. 89.
  4. Pending EOIs: If you have previously submitted an EOI for the Global Talent Visa and have not received a response, you can still lodge a valid Global Talent (subclass 858) visa application before the NIV is introduced. Alternatively, you can wait to submit a new EOI for the NIV when it becomes available.

What Does This Mean for You?

Current Applicants:

  • If you meet the eligibility requirements, consider lodging a Global Talent (subclass 858) visa application now to secure your place.
