  3. Thermal Stability : SSBs are more thermally stable than lithium batteries, with a higher melting point and reduced risk of combustion.
  4. Longer Lifespan : The stability of the solid electrolyte slows down battery degradation, resulting in a longer cycle life and broader operating temperature range.
  5. Enhanced Safety : The solid electrolyte is less likely to burn, making SSBs a safer option for consumers.

When Can We Expect SSBs to Hit the Market?

Several companies are working towards commercializing SSBs, with some targeting 2026 and others aiming for 2027. Notable players include:

  • Toyota: Plans to mass produce SSBs in 2027 or 2028, with batteries expected to offer a range of over 620 miles and charge in 10 minutes.
  • Sunwoda and GAC Motor: Plan to mass produce SSBs by 2026, with Sunwoda having already developed semi-solid-state batteries and GAC Motor completing research and development for all solid-state batteries.
  • Welion and Qingtao Energy: Plan to mass produce SSBs in 2027, with Welion partnering with NIO and Qingtao Energy partnering with SAIC Motor.
  • BYD and CATL: Plan to achieve small-scale production of SSBs by 2027, with BYD aiming to install solid-state batteries in 40,000 vehicles by 2030 and 120,000 vehicles by 2033.
