Exchange Invest was founded by former exchange CEO and author of the first bestselling book of fintech (“Capital Market Revolution!” FT 1999) Patrick L Young. Monday through Friday our daily paid subscriber email discusses the business of bourses of all kinds across the world.
This weekly edition is a magazine of broader macro topics as well as including our free weekly podcast which reviews the highlights of the week in the world’s market structure.
On this day in 2002, President Bush signed into law the most far-reaching government crackdown on business fraud since the Depression. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, named after sponsors Paul Sarbanes and Mike Oxley, was signed into law in response to corporate scandals. Its rules included the independence of corporate directors’ requirements for better internal monitoring. The law curbed stock option backdating by requiring prompt reporting of stock option grants. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCOAB) was established as part of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Very sad to see the demise of Lord Trimble who bravely did so much to try to create a peace in Northern Ireland when the opportunity arose during the Blair regime with Bill Clinton proving a much more pragmatic President on the issue than many (any?) of his predecessors. That cemented a core achievement of the last successful Democratic Presidency and has forever been a reason why I rather appreciate the Clinton era.

Contrary to much of the nonsense that is written about Brexit Britain, until last week the contest to lead one of the most powerful nations on earth was between three women, one man with Kenyan and Tanzanian roots, an Iraqi Kurd who fled Saddam Hussein and could not speak English when he arrived on these islands, a Buddhist of Indian origin, one white guy whose wife is Chinese and whose children are mixed-race, and another who has dual British-French citizenship, is Roman Catholic and descends from Austrian Jews. If anybody is underrepresented in the race for the keys to Number 10 Downing Street it is white men.
PLY: And one might add, the party concerned is the usually right of centre Conservative Party whereas the right-on lefties of the Labour Party are habitually led by white blokes whinging about the lack of opportunities for minorities. While not a fan of Dave ‘heir to Blair’ Cameron he deserves credit for accelerating modernisation of the Conservative Party.
