"A complex portrayal of racial inequality, the human cost of creativity, and the achievements of Black culture. Highly Recommended." Read our review of VOODOO MACBETH by K. Hench for The Sound View...

This real-life story follows the creation of the Federal Theatre Project's 1936 Haitian-inspired production of Macbeth. Jewell Wilson Bridges plays the role of 20-year-old director Orson Welles who assembles the play's ragtag acting troupe. Welles comes to question his motives and decides to return a great deal of creative control to his acting cast. The play becomes a rousing success and overcomes numerous challenges. Shakespeare continues to influence writers today. I used a bastardized the version of one of his poems in Completely Loyal to Me when a con artist proposes marriage to keep the con going. GEORGE You are giving me a gift that I?never thought I could have. (kneeling) Would you honor me by becoming my wife? LENNETTE That's your bad knee. GEORGE Come away with me and be my love.?Together we will share all the pleasures of life. LYNNE That's so romantic. GEORGE (he continues in the background) I will make our bed of roses so in our fragrant bed we lie.?If these pleasures shall delight you, come live with me and be my love.?Our passion-- KAREN (whispering to Cheryl) This is like a bad horror movie. Cheryl (whispering to Karen) Bride of Frankenstein. KAREN (whispering) Which one is the monster? CHERYL (whispering) Tell me and we'll both know. LYNNE (loudly) What's the Bride of Frankenstein? CHERYL (quickly) The movie we are watching tonight. LENNETTE (cutting George off) Yes.?I will marry you.
