Excerpts from Beyond Leadership to Transformation
Bob Ruotolo
ARE YOU A: Life/Mindfulness Coach? Career Coach? Leadership Development Coach? Executive/Business Development Coach?
The central question that Beyond Leadership to Transformation System (BLTS) has been designed and developed to address is:
?“How can we, both individually and collectively, redesign or co-design ourselves and the environments in which we work and live to optimize the growth and functioning of all the members in any given institution, organization, or community?”, Dr. Bob.
Beyond Leadership to Transformation is a unique, open socio-technical-eco systems approach integrating knowledge, methodologies, technologies, and practice to leading culture change. It is focused on enhancing human performance and growth, using values and principles that are inherent in each of us that require ongoing development and practice to be fully utilized.
?The Core Values are central to any effective ‘transformation process.’ They drive and guide the change.?These values directly affect the “Why and How’ this change will come about.?The values address the proposition, ‘Does the end result justify the means?’ Get the values and beliefs right, the rest will follow. Values make up the energy source for any change process.?The core values will attract or repel other energy sources that affect the proposed change positively or negatively. In Module 2, Your Strategic Framework, I present four core values that we have applied as an integral part of this transformation process- Integrity, Shared Purpose, Partnership, and Mutual Success.
?The Leadership Model presented in Module 3 sets the expectations and competencies for leadership at every level of organization.?Some of the capacities of these competencies are believed to be more innate (part of our DNA) than others; that is, they are less easy to develop, and exist in varying degrees in individuals. This is why our orientation to leadership focuses on the ‘system requirements’ for leadership, rather than looking at only the person and what s/he may bring to the situation.
?Principle-centered refers to five principles that enhance individual and organization performance in an open, dynamic environment.?Each principle builds on the other and when practiced, links naturally to our values, beliefs, and leadership abilities.?Each principle guides our individual and enterprise behaviors when followed. These five principles are introduced and practiced in Module 3 and again in the Structured Journaling process in Module 5, Creating A Positive Difference.
?The New Leadership Spirit
?“The New Entrepreneurial Spirit….this emerging reality is one of shared ownership and partnership between the individual and the corporation.?A new corporate model where all parties come together in the act of wealth and health creation.?A model that embraces a refashioned understanding of growth, productivity, and learning.”
The concept of Leadership is expanded to a ‘capacity’ found in the individual, a mindset of ownership, mastery, continuous growth, and maturity. We will find out more about this concept below and why it is so critical to our success in this changing world.
?Yes, the world of work is different, and therefore our response to it must be different.?No longer does one enter the work force at an early age and chart his/her course based on one’s entrance education, training, and desired future.?
?What Attributes are required to be successful in today’s work world?
These are now attributes that one needs to develop as a mindset and skills set:
·??????Continuous learning is a requirement for employability.?
·??????Self-management and self-sufficiency are concepts that apply equally to individuals in the workplace, a work unit’s performance, and at the organizational level of an enterprise.?
·??????The need and ability to be responsive, adaptable, agile and resilient are called for in the realm of being competitive and successful in today’s business world.
?Critical questions to be addressed:
·??????How prepared are we for such a work environment??How much are we affected by the above change?
·??????Is there a set of behaviors and attitudes that can be looked for and, better yet, developed in people who want to compete and succeed??
·??????Can business owners and leaders create an environment and culture that attracts, grows, and nurtures such behaviors and attitudes?

The answer to all these questions is a resounding YES!?
This program employing the Beyond Leadership to Transformation System? provides a way to achieve this end both conceptually and practically with models, curriculum, tools, technologies and practices.
?What are the added dimensions that make this concept new, The New Entrepreneurial Spirit?
The newness refers to the need to partner with others and to work in harmony with others. This means not being the lone star putting him or her up against the world! The last characteristic is to be principled-centered.?That is, that you are clear on the few principles that govern your behavior and that you can communicate these principles and have them supported by others.?These are the qualities of a Change Master or a Master Teacher.?
?The Role of Leadership
“Before we can truly ‘transform’ in our own life and have a positive effect on others, it would be helpful to have an understanding of our Being, our own nature as human beings.?With this basic awareness, we can better care for, nurture, and develop ourselves and others. This is an important role of Leadership.”, Dr. Bob
?Current demands we are facing today
Today we see a great emphasis and need for ‘collaboration’ and cooperation within and across organizational and political boundaries.?We see and recognize the need to ‘manage conflict’ and to develop ‘conflict resolution capabilities’, rather than the escalation of conflict in today’s workplace and society.
Therefore, the adoption of the core values of partnership and mutual success should enhance our personal growth, performance and social interaction, and our abilities to live on harmony on this planet.
Do you agree that with the current demands on us, the adoption of the above stated core values would be a partial solution to these challenges?
?“I have found personally in my own search for purpose and meaning that these key words, in service of me and others, have significant meaning. If I follow that line of thinking in all that I do, from the humblest of tasks to the highest, I am provided with a sense of fulfillment in my life.”, Dr. Bob
?The ‘Power of Being’ at the Corporate Level whether it be team, organization, association, or community
This same concept applies not only to the individual, but also at the team, organizational, and institutional or societal levels.?At these levels we are referring to the formation of culture.?The leadership process usually begins with the creation of vision, either informally or formally. The sharing of that vision with likeminded leaders, and the expanding of the vision with followers, is the foundation and growth of any institution.
?The role of leadership is to be the change you want to bring about, by doing what needs to be done to manifest the mission, values, and beliefs, and ultimately achieve or have the results of the vision created.?This is the full cycle of change, and since change is constant, it is ever evolving in our temporal world and needs continuous focus and clarity.?The focus is on what are we trying to achieve, the desired results, and the clarity is on why. Leadership needs to ask, “What are the consequences of our decisions and actions?”?Leadership has the responsibility and accountability to lead by its core values and guide by its principles.?
