I am very proud to announce that my new book, My NOW for the Future Man is ready for production and I am officially taking advanced orders! I am sharing this honor with 10 amazing authors through Moovin4ward Publications who helped contribute to this book: Jonathan Oliver, Sharon A. Myers, Kevin Boston-Hill, Lonnie Matthews, Mark Wiggins, Michael Daniels, Frank Simmons, Steven Stewart, Rodney Burns, and Tony Gordon.
Who is this book for?
This book is intended to encourage young men to understand that “becoming a man” is more than a birthday milestone, but also includes being accountable for personal actions and responsible in their families and communities. This book offers guidance on developing “manly” traits such as courage, honesty, perseverance, confidence and fiscal responsibility. Topics may include education, career, relationships, spirituality, finance, family, and more.
My chapter,"A Father's Legacy", focuses on the key values of fatherhood from my perspective as a son and as a father today. My goal for all men, regardless of what your experience was like with your Dad, is to show how a father can create an incredible legacy, even in the most challenging of situations.
Here is an excerpt from my chapter:
In 2006 my wife and I relocated to Austin, TX. It was difficult to leave my family behind, but it was for an incredible career opportunity. I also knew that if I had to experience one more Maine winter, I was going to lose my mind. Even with 2,200 miles between us, my Dad and I would still talk at least three times a week on the phone and he would come to visit two or more times a year. By April of 2011, I was going through a very challenging and low period in my life. I remember calling my Dad…”Hey Pop, I really need you here…going through a lot of stuff”. He told me it wasn’t really possible to come down at that moment but maybe in another month. My Dad wasn’t a spontaneous person…he was a planner and he liked cheap plane tickets, so flying at the last second was an expensive idea; however, five minutes after that call, he called back and said he was flying out in a couple days to spend a week with me. That was superhero stuff to me, and I was a grown man at the time. My Dad tended to think with his wallet first but his heart always made the right choice. Honestly, I wish I was as responsible with money as he was.
Being present with your kids (or spouse, friends, etc.) is not just about being physically there. Present means being engaged with those around you. This means your children get all of your attention where you are listening and interacting with them. This level of engagement allows you as a father to hear and feel the things that are not being said. My Dad didn’t just hear that I wanted him to come see me in Texas; he heard and felt the urgency in my voice.
- Be engaged with your children – interact, listen, and play.
- Listen to what is not being said – your kids are saying so much more than what is being spoken. Get connected and deepen your learning of what’s really happening.
- Trust your intuition – It’s never wrong.
- Know that your kids are always watching and learning from you – even the smallest moments can create long lasting memories.
