Excerpt 4, from Throwing Stones
One of the reasons I keep coming back to altered book covers as a vessel for my boxed assemblage art has to do with the nature of holding and handling a book and using that intimacy to provide removable parts of the artwork. Most of my book pieces from the last decade offer containers, cards, or tiles which can be taken out of their composition. Aside from the user interaction this method also provides me with a multiplicity of ways to display and organize the collaged material of the artwork.
I was excited, after several trials, to construct a holder for these small collaged tiles which uses a piece of tinted glass and a piece of felt to hold the tiles firmly and allow for their removal while also having them on display within the composition.?
Both sides of the tiles from this piece can be viewed on its webpage--
