On Exams and the Grading System
Believe it or not- we young people actually love to learn new things. We feel great to be able to apply our knowledge in real life challenges and become more accomplished. But I feel that the traditional education system often comes in the way of our learning process and causes unnecessary stress.
For instance, for a person who didn't study properly throughout the year the final exams are very stressful. Now one might argue that 'not studying properly' itself is a bad idea and it must bring its consequences. My answer is, yes, but the system made the exams a much bigger deal than the learning process - which is, in my opinion, not the ideal scenario.
The problem with the traditional exams is - whether you're prepared for them or not, you must show up. Why is that a problem? Let me explain.
Suppose you want to become stronger - physically. So you're working out everyday. After a year when you want to show your friends how much strength you have gained, you're doing twenty pushups in front of them. This indicates that you've actually become stronger, because previously you could do only five pushups.
But what if the gym wouldn't care about your gradual improvements, your daily workouts and personal hygiene - instead kept focusing on doing the 20 push ups? I think you wouldn't be able to achieve the desired strength with the same amount of enthusiasm because of focusing on the test. Many of us would feel frustrated and directionless in that situation.
In my opinion, same principles apply for education. Assessments should be done in a way that the attendees don't have to come 'prepared'. The ideal scenario is that they had already gone through all the prerequisites of the assessment, that's the reason they're willing to take it.
Now let's talk about the grading system. The one we have now is unfair at best and ineffective at worst. So you got 65 in maths. What does this mean? It may mean that you are bad at maths, you somehow couldn't prepare yourself for the test properly, or maybe you were sick or late at the exams or maybe you were simply uninterested. These grades neither determine one's success nor evaluate an individual's capabilities effectively. These grades don't even show which areas of a subject you have more grip on.
My proposition would be to evaluate students through a more detailed, scientific and unbiased system, which would allow the students to know which area of expertise they need to focus on and some directions on how they can improve.
