An Example of No Pitch Correction or Autotune!

Finally, it's nice to write a very brief article here and lay to rest that I have a rude, "stick in the mud" mentality from my previous post on the increasing use of pitch control and autotune in the music business. Over Thanksgiving, I watched Fil Henley's recent installment on his YouTube channel, Wings of Pegasus, and pleasantly discovered an example where this wasn't the case.
Imagine if you will, attending a concert that is not subject to either of these two practices that -- personally speaking for myself -- takes the full joy and authenticity away from a band or artist that isn't playing live. Henley selected two separate performances from the band, U2, and there was no evidence whatsoever of pitch control or autotune. How refreshing for a change! A band actually playing live with no backing track and no lip-synching. The two performances in the video link below are from Pasadena, California and took place on May 20 and 21, 2017.
Any band or artist that remains true to their core and has worked so hard for years to become successful with U2's level of technical excelllence makes me feel thankful. This is truly the best argument I know of against pitch control and autotune. Every evening performance is fresh. The band remains energized, and the fans are exceptionally rewarded with a great experience. What you are seeing and hearing is authentic. One can only hope that more examples as this one below will encourage artists and producers alike to reverse course and insist on not using autotune or pitch control over a natural performance that isn't perfect (and doesn't need to be).
Incidentally, Fil Henley received a request to analyze this particular video link from a regular viewer of his channel who was considering purchasing tickets to a U2 concert. I suspect they can now go ahead and buy their tickets with confidence and enjoy the show. The results of this shorter than usual video speaks for itself and it's a pleasure to share. So, cheers to Bono on vocals, The Edge on guitar, Adam Clayton and Larry comprising the rhythm section of bass and drums. This is a great band that keeps it real. Happy Thanksgiving today and everyday for all musicians who stay the course that is true North and bring us all great music.

3 个月Great to read. Even with music, itself, without any technical assistance, I always enjoyed rough -edged presentations over slick, polished sounds. Jefferson Airplane (especially live, such as on 30 Seconds Over Winterland, ): Yes; Jefferson Starship (zzzzzz): No. Keep it real. Thanks, Michael.
