Exactly Where I'm Supposed to Be: Finding Confidence in the Journey
For a long time, I struggled with the pace of my progress, constantly feeling as though I wasn't far enough along personally or professionally. Transitioning from a great corporate career into real estate was challenging, especially during COVID lockdowns. There were many days when just getting up, showering, and preparing for another unpredictable day felt like a monumental task. I wrestled with uncertainty, often wondering if I'd made the right decision or if I'd ever reach the goals I envisioned.
Much of my stress revolves around financial stability, the persistent anxiety of balancing immediate business and personal needs against long-term plans. Building a referral-based real estate business from scratch isn't easy—especially when every slow month triggers questions about the long-term financial success of the business. Even when things are going well, the fear of not achieving results fast enough often overshadows my ability to appreciate the progress I've already made. It is exhausting to constantly live in a future that hasn't yet arrived, and to overlook the accomplishments I'd already made along the way.
Recently, however, I've adopted a simple but powerful mantra: "I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be." This isn’t a perspective I’ve always had; rather, it’s something that has taken shape over the last few months, particularly as I’ve reflected on the natural cycles of my business. My wife, who is also my business partner, and I have had a lot of conversations about profitability—especially coming out of a slow season. Real estate is traditionally sluggish through the holidays and into the first part of the year, and this past season was no different. We were short on clients, and income wasn’t where we wanted it to be.
But something interesting kept happening. Just as we’d start feeling the crunch, new clients would emerge. Not from aggressive marketing or paid ads, but from referrals—people reaching out because they truly needed our help. Some of these were folks in tough situations: needing to sell quickly, struggling to qualify for a home, or facing circumstances that required guidance beyond just buying or selling a house. And each time we were wondering where the next client would come from, someone else would appear. It wasn’t coincidence; it was proof that we were showing up exactly where we were needed, exactly when we were needed.
That’s when the realization set in: I’m not behind. I’m not off track. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
The Importance of a Support System
Hard days still happen, and when they do, one of the things that pulls me forward is Jenny, my wife and business partner. We've talked before about the importance of open, direct, and candid communication in a previous blog (here), and that has been absolutely critical for me. Jenny is my guiding light. She keeps me on track, encourages me when I’m down, and listens when I need to vent about the pressures of running a business.
Having someone to talk through challenges with—just to say things out loud and process them—makes a difference. The weight of uncertainty and stress feels lighter when it’s shared, and I know I’m lucky to have someone who not only supports me but also helps me see things from a clearer perspective. Doing hard things is easier when you have someone to remind you why you're doing them in the first place.
Recognizing the Impact Beyond the Numbers
Another thing that helps on the hard days is focusing on the real impact of the work we do. In real estate, the wins aren’t always about financial milestones. Of course, making a living matters, but there’s also a huge emotional payoff in helping people navigate life-changing moments.
Some of the most fulfilling experiences have been working with clients who didn’t think they could buy a home, weren’t sure they’d qualify, or needed to sell a property under difficult circumstances. Not everyone leaves feedback, but the ones who do—the ones who felt stuck or uncertain and later realized they could move forward, make it all worth it. Seeing someone go from “I don’t think this is possible” to “I can’t believe this actually happened” is something I’ll never get tired of seeing happen.
Trusting the Process
Understanding this mantra has helped me reframe the way I see myself professionally and personally. I've begun to appreciate the small victories more and worry less about not yet having reached some idealized finish line. It serves as a constant reminder that even though my circumstances may not perfectly match my ultimate goals, they’re essential stepping stones in the right direction.
I've learned firsthand that sustained progress involves consistent effort, patience, and allowing room for trial and error. Like baking sourdough bread, each failed loaf teaches me something valuable for the next attempt. The frustration of slow progress is replaced with the satisfaction of steady improvement. Just like nurturing my real estate career or learning to manage burnout, meaningful outcomes don't always manifest immediately.
If you're feeling stuck, frustrated, or impatient with your progress, consider adopting this mindset. Remind yourself that you're exactly where you're supposed to be. It doesn't mean settling; instead, it acknowledges that genuine growth and significant achievements require a foundation built patiently over time.
Celebrate each step forward, big or small, and remember that every moment contributes meaningfully to your journey.
