Alison Wedgwood, Founder

eWATERservices has taken its first very exciting steps into Kenya.

Following a series of meetings and site visits, County Governors,?Water Services Providers Association (WASPA), the regulator WASREB and Central Government Ministries have all been very welcoming and engaged in detailed conversations about the eWATER model. They are very focused on our game-changing technology and the fact that eWATER stays involved overseeing professional local O&M teams for a minimum of 10 years to guarantee 24/7 access to clean water for all our customers.?

Last week we signed an MoU with the Governor of Tharaka-Nithi County. I’m sure this will only be the first of many such dynamic relationships that we build in Kenya, and I cannot wait to see how this evolves.

I am proud to have been part of the eWATER delegation in Kenya over the last couple of weeks. We met with many influential partners that form some of the water space, including Safaricom and various water meter companies. Signing the 10 year MoU with Tharaka-Nithi was a highlight, but there have been many.?

Tharaka-Nithi County has plenty of issues with water supply and the Governor and his team are extremely supportive of us to provide sustainable solutions to these problems. In our discussions with the governor’s team we discussed rolling out water systems and how the County can help by supplying the use of their drilling rigs and engineering support. Our County Partners for Tharaka-Nithi are Maji Popote. Read on for a brief Q&A with Maji Popote Managing Director Felix Mutuura.

I am confident we will hit the ground running with integrated payment solutions and household meter technology to provide world class rural water supply. There were a lot of promising conversations and I am confident eWATER will have a strong presence in many more counties soon. The excitement after our first signing in Kenya was so high that it was covered across various national media, including KTN news:

Felix Mutuura, Managing Director, Maji Popote?

Firstly, congratulations on getting the MoU signed with eWATER and Tharaka-Nithi County. How do you feel about the news?

“I am very excited about the MoU which sets the framework for our engagement with the county government and paves way for the implementation of our projects.”

What do you think a partnership between eWATERservices and Maji Popote can offer the people of Kenya??

“Our partnership is going to set the bar for water service provision. Kenyans can expect quality service through delivery of affordable water in sufficient quantity and of the highest quality possible. We guarantee that in our areas of service, water will be available less than 200 metres from the nearest homestead, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 95% of the time.”?

When do you think you will start installing the eWATERservices water systems?

“We have international funding lined up and so as soon as the Service Provision Agreement is signed by all parties we will begin installing the upgraded water system and the eWATER Smart Taps. We will also be engaging with the local community and registering all the households that want to use the system. We hope this will take place very quickly so that by June we are able to install the first system.? After that we hope to complete many rural villages in Tharaki-Nithi, and a few more Counties before the end of the year.”

Finally, what do you see eWATER’s role in Kenya looking like in ten years time?

“In 10 years, eWATER will be ranked among the ‘very large’ water service providers based on the number of customer connections and?area of coverage.”

Where we are today:

With 902 Smart Taps in service, we have served over a billion litres of clean water to more than 213,000 people in Tanzania, The Gambia and Ghana.
