The evolving value of SAP Sapphire: A personal perspective

The evolving value of SAP Sapphire: A personal perspective

Over my three decades of experience in the SAP ecosystem, my perception of SAP Sapphire has changed dramatically. Initially, in a veil of mystery Sapphire was a place where senior colleagues returned with tales of the innovative MySAP.Com and and composable ERP, while whispers of "SAP consulting taking away our jobs" painted a concerning picture.

?

Early career: A mix of emotions

?

My initial non-attendance was accompanied by a complex web of emotions. Jealousy hit me for not being included – somewhat driven by the perception of Sapphire as a work-vacation with extravagant events like Coldplay performances and fine dining. Yet, a sense of relief balanced this envy, as I avoided losing my weekends to long-haul flights and minimal sleep.

?

Sporadic attendance: A young professional's perspective

?

During the following years, my attendance became sporadic. I often found myself indifferent, attending primarily to accompany clients or for specific critical meetings. When attendance wasn't mandatory, I offered my spot to enthusiastic colleagues eager for the experience and the associated learning experiences. The social aspect held appeal in my younger years, as did the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers. However, a solitary experience at a conference with a minimal company presence left me feeling isolated.

?

The dreaded chore: Attending regularly but not really enjoying it

?

A period followed where I viewed Sapphire as a necessary but unpleasant obligation. The pressure to maintain professionalism and the constant expectation to attend others' meetings while making an impact created a sense of being pulled in a thousand directions. Reunions with former colleagues often triggered introspection and a touch of imposter syndrome. The logistical concerns - navigating trains, taxis, worries about finding the booth added to the overall stress, leaving me more focused on avoiding mistakes than embracing the potential benefits.

?

Embracing the value: A shift in perspective

?

Over the past two years, a more enlightened outlook has driven me. I've really anticipated Sapphire, readily engaging in conversations, and leveraging my established network to schedule coffee meetings. I've found that reconnecting with former colleagues is an amazing opportunity for mutual support and positive networking.

?

And something not to be understated - SAP Sapphire presents a unique opportunity to pack a quarter's worth of meetings into a few concentrated days. I’m really looking forward to the 2024 edition, I am eager to capitalize on these moments. More importantly, I value the chance to connect face-to-face with colleagues from around the world, many of whom I only interact with virtually, and to cultivate a relaxed and productive experience.

?

Just to add – I absolutely acknowledge the privilege associated with attending events like SAP Sapphire. While it may not be accessible to everyone, for those fortunate enough to receive an invitation, I urge you to maximise the value of your time there. And if you are going, I’d love to catch up with you. Drop me a comment below or reach out directly with a message.

Thank you, David Lowson, for sharing your insightful perspective on SAP Sapphire. Your journey from initial envy to embracing the value of face-to-face networking resonates with many professionals. As you rightly acknowledge, attending such events is a privilege. I appreciate your encouragement to maximize the value of our time there. From my own experience, I initially enjoyed the SAP Sapphire events for the same reasons as you mentioned in your article, most notably because they were a treasure trove of learning opportunities through meeting diverse individuals and understanding SAP’s future direction. However, over time, I felt that the tangible value I was gaining diminished, prompting me to take a break and skip the events. Despite this, I concur with your view that these events are invaluable for the chance to meet like-minded professionals and exchange ideas. It’s through these interactions that we can truly learn and grow.
