Evolving Technology Organizations: Visualized

Evolving Technology Organizations: Visualized

How is your technology organization perceived by your business and your stakeholders? ?Do they see you as an advisor, a partner, or simply working to prove that you can execute?

Understanding how businesses view technology, and choose to work with you, is an important benchmark in gauging the maturity curve of your teams.

When leading transformative organizational pivots and driving course corrections, an efficient way to “spot check” your progress is to step back and ask yourself three interconnected questions:

  1. How are you perceived by your partners and customers?
  2. What is your org’s role in defining and solving shared problems?
  3. What is the scope of your org’s work and how much autonomy do you possess?

As a business enabler, technology must earn trust and demonstrate specific capabilities to evolve and advance its working relationship with business partners and customers. Excellence in execution leads to a seat at the table as a partner, which, in turn, can eventually lead to earning a role as a trusted advisor.?

I like to frame this dynamic in a pyramid structure, which I’ve sketched out above. Each level of the pyramid describes a realm of work and a defined role in a technology/business relationship. To move upwards, your teams must consistently demonstrate mastery of responsibilities at each level, while always stretching to continuously improve and perform at the next step up.?

The transition between these three segments should typically take nine to 15 months for a well-led technology organization. If it is taking longer than that, you need to invest the time to understand whether you are holding the right discussions and driving your organization the right way.

I hope this is a useful point of reference for leaders, engineers, and anyone interested in the role technology plays in large, complex organizations.?

I like this!? The pyramid is a really good visual for a Tech Org's evolution from simply a business necessity to a true partner.? Ideally there is only constant upward progress, but there are moments where the relationship can take a hit and seemingly slide in the opposite direction.? Good reminder for me of how important consistency is when it comes to each level of the pyramid.? Thanks for sharing this, Satya.?

Great info

Satya Addagarla, this is a fascinating perspective. Do you believe that all technology teams should strive to be advisors, or are there situations where being a partner or reliable delivery vehicle is OK?

This is a really great way of reflecting everything it takes, both visible and behind the scenes, to nurture relationships creating?a?limitless supply of energy necessary to evolve culture, build partnerships, drive value, and satisfy the end goal. Also, I feel in each of these layers "Psychology"?is critical to the workplace as it support and motivate different creative thought process.
