The evolving role of video in content marketing

The evolving role of video in content marketing

In the ever-changing landscape (or some might say "hellscape," depending on who you ask) of content marketing, video has emerged victorious as a dynamic and essential medium. Once considered a supplementary tool, video has now taken center stage, becoming an essential of many successful content marketing strategies.?

This shift is driven by a few key factors:?

  • Technological advancements
  • Changing consumer behaviors
  • The ability to convey complex messages quickly and effectively

The rise of video content?

Video's rise to supreme status in content marketing is closely tied to the advances in tech and the need for quick, or what I like to call “snackable content.” With the proliferation of smartphones, shortened attention spans, and the need for instant gratification among audiences, accessing and sharing video content has never been easier.?

Platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have capitalized on these trends, creating ecosystems where video content thrives. For marketers, this has opened new avenues to engage with audiences, build brand awareness, and drive conversions.

Video: a preferred medium for modern consumers

Consumer behavior has also played a significant role in video’s popularity. Today’s consumers are bombarded with information from multiple channels, making attention a scarce commodity. Video, with its ability to combine visuals, sound, and storytelling, cuts through the noise. It’s no wonder that studies have shown that video content is more engaging than text and static images. According to a report by HubSpot, 54% of consumers want to see more video content from brands they support, indicating a clear preference for this medium.

Video’s versatility also contributes to its prevalence. It can be used across the marketing funnel—from awareness to conversion—tailoring the message to the audience’s stage in the buyer’s journey. For example, short, attention-grabbing videos work well for social media, while longer, in-depth videos are ideal for product demonstrations or customer testimonials, more conducive for YouTube.

The power of storytelling through video

One of video’s most compelling attributes is its ability to tell stories. In an era where consumers are increasingly seeking authenticity and connection, video offers a powerful way to convey a brand’s narrative.?

Through storytelling, brands can evoke emotions, build trust, and foster loyalty. The combination of visual and auditory elements makes it easier for viewers to connect with the content on a personal level, which is crucial in building trust and a lasting relationship with the audience.

Video as a driver of SEO and engagement

Beyond engagement, video plays a critical role in search engine optimization (SEO). Search engines, particularly Google, favor websites with video content, often ranking them higher in search results. This is partly due to video’s ability to keep visitors on a page longer, reducing bounce rates and signaling to search engines that the content is valuable.?

Additionally, video content is highly shareable, increasing the likelihood of earning backlinks, which further boosts SEO efforts. That being said, always take the time to optimize your metadata and keywords on the backend to ensure the maximum results in your search rankings.

Interactive videos, live streaming, and virtual reality (VR) are also gaining traction, offering new ways to engage audiences and create immersive experiences.

Video is no longer just a component of content marketing—it is a driving force. Brands that embrace video as a central part of their strategy are likely to see increased engagement, stronger connections with their audience, and improved ROI.?

The article itself should have been a video. Using video in marketing is a very minor component in any strategy. Getting that video in front as many eyes as possible is the most difficult piece of the equation for nearly all marketing teams. The gross misunderstanding of social media and how it actually works kills most efforts within months as internal corporate marketing departments honestly believe they are going to figure it out on their own because “Becky” has a killer personal Instagram account. Something to keep in mind, the video quality can always take a backseat to quality content with clear and concise messaging. Over producing an empty campaign where the audience has no idea who you are, what you do, or what you’re selling is a guaranteed loser.
