The evolving role of purpose and values in executive search

The evolving role of purpose and values in executive search

During 25 years in the search industry, I've witnessed significant shifts in how companies and candidates perceive purpose and values.

If I rewind to 15 or 20 years, I encountered cynicism towards the importance of purpose and values.

However, they have moved from the periphery to a central role in today's company culture.

But how important are purpose and values in executive hiring processes?

Regardless of market conditions, hiring the best is not easy, so companies must differentiate themselves to attract top-tier talent.

A compelling employer value proposition and company culture have always been integral to hiring. How we prioritise purpose and values is different in today's hiring landscape.

It's no longer just about being the most profitable. Social conscience dramatically affects a company's reputation, which impacts investor sentiment and employer brand.

Purpose-driven initiatives, such as sustainability, resonate strongly with candidates, particularly younger generations.

As a result, purpose and values are now essential components of a company's identity.

Leadership: walking the talk

More than glossy brochures are needed to showcase purpose and values.

Today's candidates want to see these principles embodied in the leadership team.

Companies with the most impactful cultures are those where the CEO and leadership actively live and breathe the values they promote. In these organisations, culture is not just a talking point but a core element of internal communications, investor updates, and daily operations.

Defining a purpose and set of unique values is no small feat. However, managing around these values and consistently reminding employees of the company's vision is crucial for long-term success. It's about creating an environment where people can thrive, perform to their highest potential, and feel genuinely respected.

What candidates are looking for

Interestingly, while leadership candidates may only sometimes ask about a company's purpose and values upfront, these factors become increasingly important as they consider an opportunity more seriously.?

A genuine respect for people, a thriving culture, and leadership embodying company values are critical indicators of an organization where people can flourish.

The conversation around purpose and values is more relevant now than ever before. Thought leaders like Simon Sinek have long advocated for purpose-driven leadership, and it's clear that ethos has a much more significant bearing on attracting C-level talent.?

For companies and candidates alike, aligning on purpose and values is no longer just an option—it's essential.
