The Evolving Landscape of Work in Ireland: Embracing Remote Working and the Gig Economy

As a recruiter specialising in contract roles, I have witnessed a significant shift in the Irish employment landscape. The rise of remote working, the gig economy, and the increasing preference for contractors have transformed how companies operate and manage their workforce. This evolution, driven by technological advancements and changing work preferences, presents unique opportunities and challenges for businesses and professionals alike.

The Rise of Remote Working

Remote working, once a niche concept, has become mainstream in Ireland. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transition, forcing companies to adapt quickly. In my opinion this was one of the benefits of the pandemic, people had to pause and take stock and companies had to trust employees to their jobs remotely. It proved that people could be trusted and in fact sometimes people were more productive at home!

According to a report by Eurofound, over 40% of Irish workers engaged in remote work during the pandemic, a significant increase from pre-pandemic levels.

Personally, I love the Hybrid model and the balance it brings into my life, I work two days in the office and three days at home, it gives me back time to have a better work-life balance.

Remote working offers numerous benefits, including flexibility, reduced commuting time, and improved work-life balance. For companies, it means access to a broader talent pool, lower overhead costs, and increased employee satisfaction. A study by Owl Labs found that remote workers are 22% happier than their office-based counterparts, highlighting the positive impact on employee morale and productivity.

The Gig Economy and Contracting

Parallel to the rise of remote working is the growth of the gig economy. The gig economy, characterised by short-term contracts and freelance work, has gained traction in Ireland. According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the number of self-employed individuals in Ireland increased by 12% over the past five years, reflecting a growing trend towards freelancing and contracting.

Contractors bring specialised skills and expertise to companies on a project-by-project basis, allowing businesses to be agile and responsive to market demands. For companies, using contractors can be highly effective. A study by Deloitte found that 51% of business leaders plan to increase the use of contractors in the next few years, citing flexibility and cost savings as primary reasons.

The Effectiveness of Using Contractors

Employing contractors can significantly enhance a company's operational efficiency. Contractors offer several advantages:

  1. Cost Savings: Contractors can be more cost-effective than full-time employees. Companies save on benefits, training, and other overhead costs associated with permanent staff.
  2. Flexibility: Contractors provide the flexibility to scale up or down based on project needs, ensuring that businesses can adapt to changing market conditions.
  3. Specialised Skills: Contractors bring niche expertise that may not be available in-house, allowing companies to complete projects more efficiently and effectively.

Research by McKinsey & Company indicates that companies using contractors can achieve up to a 30% reduction in labour costs while maintaining or improving productivity levels.

Thanks Matt, interesting article about the growing "Gig Economy in Ireland" I have been a contractor for many years now. I started doing it when kids were small, the upside is I get to work on some incredibly interesting projects in my own time, I personally love the freedom and flexibility of contracting.
