Twenty years ago, recruitment was simpler - basic résumés, limited job boards, and in-person interviews.
Today, as I look back on my career spanning Pakistan, Dubai, and Canada, I am reminded of how much the landscape has changed. From managing mass hiring campaigns for engineering projects at Siemens Pakistan to leading high-profile recruitment for banking giants in Dubai, each chapter of my career taught me lessons that resonate even now.
The Rise of Digital Transformation
In the late 2000s, I was overseeing national and international recruitment efforts for Siemens. Back then, sourcing talent meant sifting through piles of paper and making countless calls and the process was labor-intensive. During the GSM Telecom project, I facilitated the relocation of over 50 engineers from Southeast Asia and Europe to Pakistan. This massive undertaking would be simplified today with the help of applicant tracking systems and AI-driven platforms. The lesson here?
Embrace technology but never lose sight of the personal touch.
When I moved to Dubai and joined Emirates National Bank of Dubai (ENBD), the digital revolution was gaining pace. We introduced tools like Taleo and LinkedIn Recruiter to reduce hiring timelines. One of my proudest moments was leading a three-month recruitment drive for over 300 roles, reducing the time-to-hire by 25% with strategic use of these platforms.
Today, job seekers should master these tools as much as recruiters do.
Skills That Stand the Test of Time
Recruitment has always been about more than filling vacancies; it's about building futures. Throughout my tenure at Muller & Phipps and ENBD, I observed that while job-specific skills fluctuate with industry needs, soft skills are constant.

Critical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication were vital then and remain so today.
An example that stands out is when I spearheaded a diversity initiative at ENBD to integrate individuals with special needs into the workforce. This effort taught me that beyond skills, a person’s potential and determination often lead to success.
Resilience and learning agility is the new currency for job seekers.
The Golden Key For Today's Job Seeker
Today, the job market is more interconnected than ever. During my tenure managing international talent at Siemens and later at RAKBANK, I learned the art of aligning talent across borders. A successful job seeker in this global economy must leverage digital tools, network proactively, and present a versatile skill set.
Participating in webinars, up-skilling through courses, and engaging in professional communities are no longer optional but essential.
The current emphasis on data literacy and digital fluency can’t be understated. The HRIS implementation at ENBD, reducing manual processes by up to 70%, I realized how these new skills could elevate a team’s productivity. For job seekers, keeping up with these demands is crucial.
Invest time in mastering data analysis tools and understanding industry-specific software.
If I’ve learned anything from two decades of recruitment, it’s that the job market will continue to evolve in unpredictable ways. Whether it was adapting to the shift from in-person to virtual hiring or spearheading process digitization, staying ahead required embracing change with confidence.
