Reflecting on my journey with the IPL 2022 auction, I developed a player valuation model within a constrained timeframe of about a week. This process, based on three years of match-level data, resulted in the ‘SportsNerd Score’, assessing each player’s potential value to various IPL teams. While effective, this approach had its limitations due to the time constraint and data scope. You can view this initial analysis on my Tableau dashboard here.
As I prepare for the 2024 auction, with 1,166 players registered and base prices going up to 2 crores, my approach is evolving substantially. This time, I have the advantage of more preparation time and access to a vast dataset of ball-by-ball information covering 18 years, across all leagues and levels. This wealth of data will enable a far more robust and comprehensive model.
Furthermore, unlike the 2022 analysis that focused solely on on-field performance, the 2024 model will integrate off-field factors as well. This broader perspective aims to offer a more holistic assessment of a player’s value, blending on-field prowess with off-field influence.
I hope these insights into the evolution of player valuation in the IPL resonate with your understanding of the sport’s dynamics. If you have thoughts or experiences that could contribute to this discussion, feel free to share them. Each viewpoint enriches our collective understanding of cricket analytics.
Stay tuned for more updates as I delve into this detailed and nuanced approach to player valuation for the upcoming IPL auction.
