Evolving Fast

Evolving Fast

My Trump caricature is coming along, changing, morphing into the cartoon character he will become. All presidents do. My caricature of Pres. George W. Bush evolved from a goofy-looking nebbish into a dumb monkey, a chimp wearing a bicycle helmet. After one term, it reflected my opinion of him perfectly.

Funny thing about caricatures. As I draw them over and over, they become a cartoon character that would look right at home on the comics page. That’s the revealed truth in caricature. It’s common among more artistically ignorant writers to dismiss someone as a caricature and not a real person. That’s because they don’t understand the power of a cartoon to show us what’s really going on. Sure, the Declaration of Independence was written in words and has endured, but Ben Franklin’s cartoon of the chopped up snake captioned “JOIN, or DIE” has endured too and is just as relevant today as when it was drawn in 1754. Plus, it’s more entertaining to look at.
