Evolving Every Year
Every year things will change in technology. Constant evolution of skills mostly doesn't occur at the same pace as the technology changes for the entire lifespan of a career though. This is is why it is incredible when a person has learned something substantial every year. Key traits of a career evolver are: Resilience, Acceptance, and Scientific Curiosity.
Resilience
A recent article by Adam Grant mentions that true resilience involves a practicality that above all protects yourself. Continuous career evolvers are constantly changing because they have the desire, energy and self-discipline to do so. As a direct contrast to being so dragged down by saying yes to everything that they blew themselves up.
Acceptance
Every job is different and being able to accept the situation for what is it is, is necessary for constant evolution. At some jobs there may not be a skill being performed that is moving a career forward, an evolver will accept this, and do the work outside of the job. A non-evolver will think that their current job is the only way to gain new skills, and this will eventually lead to stagnation.
Scientific Curiousity
Constantly looking for better solutions, technologies and methodologies causes constant evolution. Initial skills could be ideal in a career for a while, but everything changes and eventually something better will replace what is your core value. Scientifically curious evolvers already know this and are working hard to find the best solution on a daily basis, not just the solution they know.
