But consider this—if you can define the feelings you want to experience in December, you’ll be better equipped to make choices today that lead you there. Stephen Covey encapsulated this idea in his principle of "beginning with the end in mind." While it’s often applied to projects or career goals, it holds immense power when applied to the way you live your life.

The Power of Clarity

Imagine yourself on New Year’s Eve, 12 months from now. Picture your ideal self. What emotions do you want to carry? Perhaps you want to feel proud of what you’ve accomplished, calm in the knowledge that you lived authentically, or joyful because you created memories that matter.

These feelings don’t appear by accident. They are cultivated by aligning your actions with your values and aspirations. It’s tempting to set ambitious goals like "lose 10 kilograms" or "earn a promotion," but those goals should serve a deeper purpose. Why do you want to lose weight? Is it to feel energised, confident, or healthier? Why seek the promotion? Is it to feel fulfilled, respected, or secure? By focusing on the feelings behind your goals, you’ll anchor your journey in something meaningful.

Setting Intentions, Not Just Goals

Goals are about what you want to achieve. Intentions focus on who you want to become. Consider pairing your resolutions with intentions. For instance, if your goal is to read 20 books this year, your intention could be to cultivate curiosity and continuous learning.

Intentions also allow for flexibility. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes circumstances shift. When they do, your intentions can guide you to adapt without losing sight of what truly matters. They remind you that the destination isn’t just about ticking off boxes but about growing into the person you aspire to be.

A Year of Reflection and Action

As you plan for the year ahead, try this simple exercise. Write down how you want to feel on December 31st, 2025. Then, identify three areas of your life that need attention to help you achieve those feelings. Perhaps it’s your relationships, career, health, or personal growth. Finally, commit to one action in each area that you can start today.

For example, if you want to feel more connected to loved ones, perhaps you’ll make a weekly habit of meaningful conversations. If peace of mind is your goal, you might start a mindfulness practice. These small, consistent steps will compound over the year, shaping your reality in profound ways.

The Challenge of the Year Ahead

As you navigate the coming months, challenges will undoubtedly arise. There will be moments when your resolve falters, when distractions tempt you off course. In those moments, return to your vision of how you want to feel. It’s a powerful compass that can recalibrate your actions and keep you moving forward.

You don’t need to have all the answers now, nor do you need to make massive changes overnight. The beauty of a year lies in its length—a generous stretch of time to experiment, learn, and grow. Be kind to yourself in this process. Progress isn’t linear, and setbacks are part of the journey.
