The evolution of the investor landscape in Jordan - a fund map

Beyond Capital has compiled the investor landscape in an effort to outline its evolution in the last 6 years. The fund maps outlined take into consideration three aspects: fund size, ticket size, fund status. The aim of the fund map is to illustrate the evolution of the investor landscape in Jordan

Note:

1. The map is not to scale but aims to portray funds’ size, ticket, and type.??

2. The map only includes funds based in Jordan and regional funds with a clear Jordan mandate (i.e., funds with a specific allocation for Jordanian startups). These funds provide ardent support dedicated to the Jordanian entrepreneurial community. Other regional and global players that see Jordan as a target play a role in the extension of the support and capital that the ecosystem receives.

3. Funds are portrayed in the total fund size (final close). Similarly, regional funds are presented with respect to the total fund size and not their allocation to Jordan.??

4. The information presented in the fund map is based on Beyond Capital’s primary research and information available online.

Do you believe that access to finance remains a challenge for start-ups in Jordan? What do you think needs to be done to keep the momentum going and expand further?

There is no #investor that sings of an embarrassment of riches when it comes to #deals (maybe outside super #angelinvestors). Leads are always too something (misaligned, early, late, expensive, etc). Having been involved in Jordan's largest investment readiness programme (@jordan12, iParkJo), I have to begrudgingly agree assessments, when viewed from our prevailing VC culture. Tambi Jalouqa has a point; #seedcapital investors mean readiness is less of an issue. We can't keep chasing our tails here, how do we bridge the gap between available capital and "investable" ventures. Our #VC community is one of the most diverse and vibrant anywhere, but I am not sure if I can identify something that is intrinsic to the local VC #culture. We have no direct access to populations or public support, and so borrowing any foreign economic or operational #VC model will fail as an ecosystem misfit. What is out modus operandum? and before anybody answers no we did not invent building for internationalization, and it is not what makes us Jordanian startups or Jordanian VCs. I have grown weary of big #capacitybuilding programs and my bet is on #investmentreadiness through targeted #advisory with flexible interventions as the #dealmaking strategy

There are over 1600 "entrepreneurship" support programs in Jordan! I know a few that are doing great work but almost non of them provide direct investment, yet we still hear of new programs that will probably disappear after funding stops. I dont think we need more support programs. What we really need and as you mentioned, more pre seed / seed investors. Tambi Jalouqa Rada Hrout

Support start-ups in the idea and early MVP stages to overcome unnecessary challenges, and help them get necessary funding.
