Evolution of Information Technology

Introduction

In the early days of information technology (IT), computers were used for calculating, storing and processing data. They were mainly used by scientists and engineers in labs and universities.

But now we have come so far from those early days that we can't imagine what life would be like without computers; they are everywhere!

The internet has changed everything in our life

The internet has changed the way we communicate, do business, learn and travel. It also allows you to find information about almost anything on the planet but there are many other things that have been affected by this technology as well:

  • The way we work has also changed due to the availability of computers or laptops at home or at any place where you might be working (for example schools).

The internet also allows people to participate in activities such as social networking which allows them to stay connected with their friends and family no matter where they are in the world. In our everyday life, we have experienced many things that are made possible by technology.

One thing that has been affected by this technology is that you no longer need to go into a store to buy something when there are other options like online shopping which eliminates the need for traveling.

To begin with, data is the new oil

In the past, oil was used for transportation and energy purposes. Today, data is the fuel that powers our global economy.

Data is the most valuable asset of any company. It is what allows companies to stay competitive in a global market and make decisions with confidence.

As the world becomes more data-centric, the amount of information that can be stored in one place has increased dramatically. This growth in data storage capacity has led to expansion of our digital footprint and interconnectedness.

Fourth industrial revolution

We are in the midst of a fourth industrial revolution that is transforming our world. The first three revolutions were all about new materials, such as steel and rubber: the second was about electricity and communications; the third was about computers, software and information technology (IT).

The fourth revolution will be about the internet of things (IoT), which means connecting physical objects to the internet so they can be managed remotely. This allows sensors to collect data from their surroundings—for example, monitoring whether plants need water or wind power—and then transmit it securely through networks towards users' devices or back into production systems where raw materials can be transformed into something useful.

IoT will soon help us move to smart cities

IoT is the internet of things, which means that it's a network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to sense and connect to the internet.

The idea behind IoT is that these devices can collect data about their surroundings and send it back out. This information could be used by governments or businesses to improve city planning, public health, traffic flow or even help save lives in emergencies like earthquakes or floods.

The IoT can help us move towards smart cities, which are highly efficient and integrated, with better use of resources and increased safety for residents.

As cities become more connected through technology, we will see an increase in the amount of information available about what's happening on a daily basis. This can lead to better decisions being made by governments, businesses and individuals alike.

It's all about information, people connectivity and machines

However, it’s not just about data anymore—it also involves people and machines. The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon help us move towards smart cities with IoT-enabled devices like streetlights that turn on automatically when it gets dark or sensors that detect traffic jams at intersections.

The most promising application of this technology is cybersecurity because every day you get more threats than ever before; therefore, cyber security is among top priority investments for CIOs globally.

Cyber security becoming one of the top priorities

Cyber security is among top priority investments for CIOs globally. It's also a top priority for CEOs, CFOs and COOs. And it's an even higher priority for those sitting on the board of directors or as executive officers at large corporations.

In fact, cyber security has become so important that it has become one of three core functions identified by McKinsey & Company in its 2020 Global Innovation Survey (M&G), which includes other new areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR).

Machine learning, artificial intelligence and blockchain technology

Cruising towards the future of information technology, Machine learning and artificial intelligence have started adding significant value to the businesses.

They have opened up new areas of possibilities in all spheres of life including business. Information technology has made it possible for us to automate processes and make them more efficient, but what we seem to forget is that there’s still no substitute for human interaction at the end of the day.

As we move forward with machine learning, AI and blockchain technology, there will be fewer people who understand how these technologies work or where they fit into a larger picture; this creates an opportunity for those who can think outside the box and do something different than everyone else on their team (or even across different industries).

Conclusion

In this writeup, we have examined the evolution of information technology from its origins in the 1970s to today. We have seen how developments in hardware, software engineering and networking technologies have driven innovation, and how new fields such as virtual reality are opening up exciting new possibilities for users. By understanding how technology has changed over time we can gain a better appreciation for where it might be heading next.
