During my final year of college, I used to imagine that once I get into a job, every day I will write thousands of lines of code and that thought used to be super exciting, my imagined repository activity would look something like the one in below pic, coding, coding and coding being the only task being a developer.
In the more than 14 years since, not even few days resemble any where close to that kind of repository activity. Having playing different roles, now this thought appears fantasy, puts a smile on my face recollecting my naivety, at the same time realizing being a developer/programmer is not JUST about writing tons of lines of code, its also about collaboration, communication, learning, sharing, dealing with messy code of mine and others, refactoring, cleaning code, designing, understanding business, functionality, raising risks, supporting others, pairing, testing of various kinds, effectively using tools, automating repeated activities, create & participate in team process, managing continuous integration and delivery, monitoring, taking responsibility for team deliverable, providing Leadership and many others..
Being a Developer/Programmer is much more than writing tons of lines of code.. or being only a Java developer or only focusing on technology and not care about actual business functionality, or user needs. Many a times its tough to give up these views we hold on to of what we want to do or not in our role, and embrace above aspects, but in doing so is the evolution of a coder to someone much more, mostly be better......, even an awesome developer and a team member. And it's such an amazing thing to see 'what' and 'who' all get impacted with this and 'whats' possible.
The same applies to any role that we play. For me as a coach over last few years, evolution continues, to be something much more than just what I want or not in my role, to be better......
Do share your experiences, also what and who got impacted and whats been possible out of that..
